“[Thompson’s] language is brilliant … [he] has presented us with a close view of a world most of us would never dare encounter.” ( New York Times)

Must listen for Hunter fans

Cool book, you can see he was like looking for trouble as much as he was trying to write a story.

Great audiobook for bikerides

It's a great peek into the racous lifestyle of the Hells Angels in California in the sixties. I listen to it on my bike ride to and from work. Transforms my crappy road bike into a roaring Harley

Starts off with a high revving v-twin

Smoking the wheel from the start and doesn't let up till the very end! fast paced and attention grabbing!

Eye opening!

captivating from the first paragraph. the reader does an excellent job of bringing Hunter S. Thompson's cynical voice to fruition. I had always heard about the Hells Angels, and the so-called atrocities they inflicted. But like most of Thompson's works, this bring into question what has been popularized and curated by corporate and political media. Fantastic!

Remarkable book, fascinating narrator

This book is a tour de force. Thompson immersed himself in that world and gave you every drop of juice possible. Intriguing to know about the lives of those bikers. So many contradictions too. Thompson's writing style is very entertaining. This was made even more fun by the narration of Scott Sowers. At first I found him unusual. He narrates quite unlike the narration you're used to. Then you immediately fall in love with him. He's exciting, and brings the book to life. You feel he's right next to you engaging you in enthusiastic conversation. This guy needs to narrate a whole lot more books, love his style.

The narrator is ruining this experience.

This guys voice and style is just obvious that he's reading this and doesn't really know Thompsons rhythm and tone. I'm regretting my purchase.

Ready to Read Again

Would you listen to Hell's Angels again? Why?

I've heard of Sonny Barger and, ironically, what a good leader he was. Decided to listen to the book to learn more about the lifestyle he led and to see what gave him away as a good leader.

Not what I expected

Having just listened to "Fear and Loathing" and having read "Rum Diaries", I expected something different from this book. What I found instead was a straight up journalism piece. Great if you're really interested in the Hell's Angels but terrible if you're looking for Hunter S. Thompson's personal touches. I found it repetitive and somewhat tedious. As for the narration, the narrator seemed to feel he needed to emphasize every sentence with force, which I didn't care for. Overall not a bad book, just not what I was expecting or wanting.

Revealing

I’m not anti-media, but it was disappointing to see how, even back in the sixties, truth took a back seat to sensationalism—turning an average bad apple motorcycle club into some mythical gang of outlaws. The behind the scenes info from this book really clarify all the stories I’ve heard over the years about the Angels. I only wish i listened to this book sooner.
