Harry S. Truman: A Life | [Robert H. Ferrell]

Harry S. Truman: A Life

Few U.S. presidents have captured the imagination of the American people as has Harry S. Truman. In this new biography, Robert H. Ferrell, widely regarded as an authority on the 33rd president, challenges the popular characterization of Truman as a man who rarely sought the offices he received, revealing instead a man who - with modesty, commitment to service, and basic honesty - moved with method and system toward the presidency.

No other historian has ever demonstrated such command over the vast amounts of material on Truman's life. Based upon years of research in the Truman Library and the study of many never-before-used primary sources, Harry S. Truman: A Life is destined to become the authoritative account of the nation's favorite president.

    "BORING !!!"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I have always thought Truman was quite an interesting person. He was down to earth, and told things the way they were. I kept hoping this would be like this, but it just drug on more and more, and just not worth the time to keep listening to it. I am very disappointed because I was thrilled to see it in the list and was so looking forward to listening to it.

Would you ever listen to anything by Robert H. Ferrell again?

Doubtful. Truman was a great person, and president. And this was just not like him at all.

How could the performance have been better?

Tell the story of Truman with the excitement to match the type of man he was.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Very disappointed. Did not expect this at all.

    Any additional comments?

Don't waste your time on this LONG drawn out story.

"A monumental work of specialist interest"

Harry Truman's influence on world affairs is under-estimated and less well-appreciated than that of more celebrated presidents such as Franklin D Roosevelt, Kennedy or the notorious Nixon. This is surprising as he had to make the awful decision to drop the atom bomb or not on Japan; be involved in the negotiations over the carving up of Europe after the Second World War; shepherd the USA from a war to a peace-time economy and enter then into the Korean War. All events having lasting and world-wide effects.
The first quarter of the book was, for me, a bit tedious with lots of parochial details about his early life. I can see that it was necessary to include some of this as it helped the reader understand what shaped the man. The book took off once he entered public life as a local judge and then became a Senator: appointments arranged for him by an all-powerful local 'boss' who corruptly manipulated business, elections and appointments. All really shocking. All though his public life Truman seems to have been surrounded by corruption and manipulation of the political process, but, apart from putting his wife on the White House payroll in return for little work, he seems to have avoided being corrupt himself and benefited little financially from high office. He comes over as a perceptive and level-headed person who didn't seek out advancement and retained a humility about his importance which enabled him to enjoy his retirement into old age.
The book is a tremendous work of scholarship with an immense amount of detail, but it aims to be an exhaustive record of the period and thereby of more specialist interest.
The reader is good, once you get used to his pronunciations of words in a way that I'm sure is authentic, but the editing of the tape is poor: over-long pauses in the recording between sentences and repeated sentences that should have been edited out
