Publisher's summary

With dramatic flair, Jeff Guinn delivers the definitive portrait of Bonnie and Clyde. These media-savvy outlaws appealed to America's Depression-era hunger for swashbuckling characters. Glowing radio and newspaper reports transformed these "public enemies" into celebrities - much like the cinema gangsters of the time.

Critic reviews

"With the brisk pacing of a novel, Guinn's richly detailed history will leave readers breathless until the final hail of bullets." ( Publishers Weekly)
"A fine work of history.... Easily readable and includes much of the last two decades' new scholarship.... Go Down Together is especially good at...placing Bonnie and Clyde in context." ( The New York Times Book Review)

The story I really didnt know

Not a criminal mastermind but more a man who wanted to "Be someone" more than anything else. Clyde Barrow led an interesting and somewhat charmed life. The tales of his adventures criss-crossing the midwest were interesting and filled in all I didnt know.

If you are interested in biographies you will find this and interesting look into the lives of two of our countries most notorious criminals.

I found the narration easy to listen to and somehow "Newsy" enough to fit the topic perfectly.

Well researched!

Listening to this book , I could understand what actually made this couple infamous. I don’t condone the crimes and the murders they committed but after what happened to Clyde in prison with the repeated assaults, the turning of the eye of prison officials then you can start to see the formation of the killer in the making ..
I can understand the hatred and anger that he felt towards law enforcement since they harassed him at the few jobs that he tried to work causing him to be fired . That along with the poor conditions and the struggle to just survive hard times during the depression I can feel a little more sympathy for them.
The one thing that disgusts me is the way they died and the way the law men lied about what happened. They never identified themselves as law officers but instead just started shooting and kept shooting . I doubt seriously that Clyde would have just give up since he repeatedly said that he would never go back to prison but it does bother me that they just started shooting and kept shooting so many rounds even though they knew after the first few shots they were dead .
After listening to the book and knowing a little more about their lives- I just can’t respect the lawmen that killed them or the “friends” that set them up. But one thing is for certain for the so called “friends” karma is a bitch that comes back to get you sooner or later .
If you would like to learn more about Bonnie and Clyde this is the best book to listen to. So the next time you watch the move with Warren Beaty and Faye Dunaway - watch it for the entertainment value of the movie since it was not historically correct.
I give this book five stars and highly recommend.

Riveting story

Enjoyed all the details. The story was different than I thought, who knew criminals would be so family oriented.

Finally!!! What Feels Like The Real Story

Great narrative and tremendous research. It's great to finally here a version of the story that removes the glamour and describes the lifestyle of the time. The author provides detail allowing the reader to visualize the times.

If this piece of history interests you, this is a must read.

Worth it!

A little redundant but engrossing, wanted more family history on Bonnie's side and wanted more with Pretty Boy Floyd

The Inexplicable Criminal Mind...

...somewhat explained. Getting the context of era and place goes a long way in helping the reader grasp why Clyde continued to do what he did. Bonnie remains more opaque for me but I think the bottom line is that the criminal life is just not appealing to me, personally - so there's a bit of voyeurism here, like watching exotic and somewhat repellant animals in a zoo. If you're interested in the reality behind the glamorous image (thank you, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway), this book is worth your time.

Long but Filling Story

Any additional comments?

The book was very long, but I definitely its worth listening to if you are interested in the history of the historic icons. I thought, at 16 hours, the book would drag on but it was actually very condensed and well written!

I was engaged throughout and it paints a good picture of the Barrow Gang and, having never seen the movie, I am excited to watch it sometime to see the accuracy.

Frank Hammer and his posse are sanctioned murderer

anyone interested in legal history and jurisprudence should definitely read this text and the focus on The Gibbsland l, LA ambush and it's aftermath. hammer pushed a blatant lie about Clyde and Bonnie. they had not had time to reach for any weapon they were ambushed in every sense of the word. hammer did not even fire first. everything in the aftermath of the ambush is a mockery of civil rights and due process of law. this is to say nothing of unconstitutional, retroactive laws and prosecution of the Barrows, Patjers and selective prosecutions there in of all and any associates. the Constitution is supposed to prohibit retroactive laws, but these 1934 Acts are still on The books I believe.
