Publisher's summary

With dramatic flair, Jeff Guinn delivers the definitive portrait of Bonnie and Clyde. These media-savvy outlaws appealed to America's Depression-era hunger for swashbuckling characters. Glowing radio and newspaper reports transformed these "public enemies" into celebrities - much like the cinema gangsters of the time.

Critic reviews

"With the brisk pacing of a novel, Guinn's richly detailed history will leave readers breathless until the final hail of bullets." ( Publishers Weekly)
"A fine work of history.... Easily readable and includes much of the last two decades' new scholarship.... Go Down Together is especially good at...placing Bonnie and Clyde in context." ( The New York Times Book Review)

Bravo!

What a great read!! Not only did I learn a lot about Bonnie & Clyde, but also about the economic conditions that produced these two outlaws. While it is truly sad what they did with their lives, their stories are really fascinating.

I had seen the movie with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. It was interesting to watch it again after reading this book and to note the "glamorization" of the two villians, as well as the many misrepresentations in the movie.

Some of the more fascinating facts have to do with the techinques they used to outgun and outrun the law. The story of how Clyde got out of prison the first time is not only interesting but unbelievably ironic. And the story of the poverty they grew up in (especially Clyde) is almost unbelievable.

One other notable theme was how many times they were severely injured and managed to live through it. Hard to believe that they actually didn't die much sooner.

The only thing that surprised me is that the chapter on their death almost seems anticlimatic and brief. The truth of the ambush and the aftermath of their death also holds many unexpected surprises.

Mr. Guinn has done a GREAT job. I learned a great deal and highly recommend this book!!

Unlike some other reviews, I had no issues with the narrator.

Good Story, Weird Narration

The story was absolutely gripping. It is a well written factual telling of the story, without being overwrought or apologizing for the actions of the Barrows. However, the narrator is distracting. He has some kind of strange lisp or slur. "Clyde" is pronounced "Dide" consistently, and there are other oddities. If you can get past the delivery, this book is great.

Good book, not a big fan of the narration

Interesting book with a lot of great details but the narration was kind of distracting. The reader sort of slurs his words at times and some letters are not clearly pronounced. It took me a while to realize Clyde's mother's name was Cumie and not Humie. And sometimes words that end with 's' seem like the ending gets lost so "Dallas" sounds like "Dallah." It's not horrible but it is a bit distracting - I'm sometimes working so hard to catch what he's saying that I lose the thread of the actual story which is very good.

Go Down Together: The True, Untold Story of Bonnie

A lisp ?? really ??
I love my audio books and this story was a great one it was well researched however, all through the first half of the book I thought maybe there was a place called Dallath back in the day, since that was what I was hearing over and over again. Mr. Hogan should never narrate a book again. Forgive my being blunt but these things cost a lot of money.

GO DOWN TOGETHER IS A FANTASTIC LISTEN!!!

GET THIS BOOK...LISTEN TO EVERY WORD...Jeff Guinn, you wrote a wonderful book. Before I say anything about "Go Down Together", the story of Bonnie and Clyde I do want to mention the only books I review are the ones I consider great. I have over 100 books in my Audio Library which allows me to say the bad as well as the good. I choose to only recommend...NOT criticize!

Any person that is a fan of true crime, regardless of the time period the story takes place, will love this audio book. I could not put it down. In fact, after listening to it, I had to go back and make sure I actually heard what I heard. Ironically, the ending actually made me feel sorry for Bonnie and Clyde. Hopefully, I am not the only weirdo that feels that way. Forget the movie, forget every book you have read about these two murderers, and forget anything related to folk tales! Jeff Guinn has written the real thing. THIS IS THE RESEARCHED BOOK I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR. I enjoyed every single minute of it. The length went by so fast; the 16 hours were over before I realized it.

Yes, I have a job. However, every single second of free time I was able to muster up, went to this great listen. "GO DOWN TOGETHER", regardless of price is now number two in my collection of over 100 audio books. I will probably listen to it again in a few months. WHAT A FASCINATING AND INTERESTING STORY. These two characters disserve to go down in history. I loved it...THAT'S IT!!! And yes...I do recommend THE TRUE STORY OF BONNIE AND CLYDE to everyone.

Mixed feelings (Book-5, Narrator-3 = 4 stars)

I really liked the material in the book! Having grown up in that area, it was interesting to hear about the Bonnie & Clyde era (which pre-dated me by a number of years - but my parents/grandparents might have known some of these people!) Lots of good (factual?) material. The author really did a lot of homework. There were some speculative elements that may have been passed off as fact - but the story really didn't seem to be hinged on those points - - they were mostly used as filler data to bridge known (and documented) facts.

NOW, my real (and only) problem with the audiobook - the narration. For 16 1/2 hrs, the listener endures the narrators fairly-strong speech impediment! At first, I thought I could be the understanding listener, and "get past it" - but after the first half-dozen hours, it just wears you down! I liked the tone/tempo/quality of the narrator's voice - overall...except for that darned lisp-like impediment. It's all focused around "s"-sounding letters - sometimes in the middle of words, and sometimes at the end (and some "th" and "z" sounds get hammered a bit, too). Still, I can handle that! I'm a really tolerant listener!!! Yet, it was the flipping inconsistency of those "mis-speaks" that killed me! Perhaps when the reader was fresh (new to a recording session), the problem wasn't as noticeable. But, (as he tired?) eventually the lisp (?) reappeared - even on words that had previously been pronounced correctly (or, perhaps, less-impinged?). It was almost like the reader bit his tongue (had tongue surgery?) during the recording sessions, and it became more swollen or sensitive the more he read. This was MASSIVELY distracting. I had to replay MANY passage!!!

Still, I managed to finish - the story is that compelling. Sure, we know they're going to die (no spoiler there - everybody knows that ending!), and most people even know HOW they died. But, it's the myriad details that keep it intriguing and fun! Still, buyer beware!

Fascinating story

Reading like a novel, this telling of the Bonnie and Clyde saga was both informative and entertaining. It describes in great detail the people behind the legend. Bonnie comes across as an adoring girlfriend rather than the hardened criminal portrayed in story and staged photographs. Also a story of the Great Depression and its impact on the working poor. Highly recommended!

Something is very seriously wrong with narration

With sincere hope Jonathan Hogan is healthy, it should be noted the narration is absolutely terrible. Plurals are dropped with appalling frequency; at times even altering meaning. Surely the producer of this book must have noticed the performance sounds as if the narrator had been drinking. I've enjoyed over 300 audio books... unfortunately, Jonathan Hogan is a horrendous distraction to an otherwise excellent piece. Read "Go Down Together" rather than waste money on this version

Wonderful Historical and Human Perspective

This book offers a refreshingly unbiased and detailed account of Bonnie and Clyde. I particularly appreciated the added historical customs, etiquette, and other information that we would not be aware of today, for example, the importance of Bonnie’s cigar, the consequences of life in the depression, and the way the law was carried out at the time. However, the narrator was a bit distracting for me. I don’t know if it is a speech impediment or just a particular jargon, but I often lost myself imagining a poor bumbling lawman being held hostage by Bonnie and Clyde, forcing him at gunpoint to read the “true account” while giggling and popping marbles into his mouth. The book is definitely good enough to get past this, and I still extremely enjoyed the author’s in-depth look at this thrilling infamous story.

AMAZING!!

From start to finish I was captivated and drawn into a world I didn't want to leave. The true account makes you feel like everything you though you knew about these 2 American folk hero's was a lie. This was an AMAZING "read"!!!
