Publisher's summary

In this side-splitting memoir, the former Saturday Night Live star recounts the hilarious adventures and unexpected joy of dating and becoming a mother when she least expected it - at the age of 44.

Anyone who saw an episode of Saturday Night Live between 1999 and 2006 knows Rachel Dratch. She was hilarious! So what happened to her? After a misbegotten part as Jenna on the pilot of 30 Rock, Dratch was only getting offered roles as "Lesbians. Secretaries. Sometimes secretaries who are lesbians."

Her career at a low point, Dratch suddenly had time for yoga, dog-sitting, learning Spanish - and dating. After all, what did a forty-something single woman living in New York have to lose? Resigned to childlessness but still hoping for romance, Dratch was out for drinks with a friend when she met John.

Handsome and funny, after only six months of dating long-distance, he became the inadvertent father of her wholly unplanned, undreamed-of child and moved to New York to be a dad. With riotous humor, Dratch recounts breaking the news to her bewildered parents, the awe of her single friends, and the awkwardness of a baby-care class where the instructor kept tossing out the f-word.

Filled with great behind-the-scenes anecdotes from Dratch's time on SNL, Girl Walks into a Bar is a refreshing version of the "happily ever after" story that proves female comics - like best sellers Tina Fey and Chelsea Handler - are truly having their moment.

So Funny! A refreshing take on a comedian's life!

This was great! I have really been into listening to comedian's narration lately and it's nice to have a take on life where it doesn't end on the big screen or the next big project. Now I have a girl-crush on Rachel. Hope we can be close and personal friends one day!

Funny and hopeful

Rachel is hilarious of course, but as a woman in her late 30’s who hasn’t had kids yet it gave me a lot of hope.

Would Love to Hear More

Enjoyed her performance. Loved hearing all the SNL stories. She seems like the kind of person you'd want to be best friends with. Nice. No life lessons. No preaching. Lots of sharing. I know her better now and would like to hear more about the next stages of her life.

I would totally buy Rachel a drink!

What did you love best about Girl Walks into a Bar...?

It was a cute and humorous story about Rachel Dratch. Not a full bio but just some exerps about her life from SNL to Motherhood.

I saw some other reviews on this site and I would say that they were unfair in saying that they didn't like this because they wanted her to talk more about SNL. Tina Fey's book was not all about SNL comments so let go of those thoughts.

Listen to this book because you want to hear some funny situations Rachel encountered. She's got a great internal insight that is amusing and fun. I liked the book. It was a great. Listen to it.

Which scene was your favorite?

When she was at Burning Man taking a pee. I'm not going to give this away so you are going to have to listen to it.

Good book

Interesting and insightful as expected. The middle sections that any girl in a big city dealing with men with infinite choices was a bit weary, but she parceled it up in cute Rachel bites. The very end of the book was the very best. Loved the meaty feet. I totally felt personally peace with her okayness with an uncertain world and the necessities and privilege of having to be more than just yourself. Thank you Rachel.

Lighthearted and Entertaining

This audiobook seemed very similar to Tina Fey's Bossypants for the first half both in writing and in narration then seemed to find its own voice. Rachel is funny and down to earth and I appreciated her honesty and quick wit. It stays pretty light and is an easy, entertaining listen. Would recommend.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!! You will laugh out loud!

Where does Girl Walks into a Bar... rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Top 2 without a doubt.

What other book might you compare Girl Walks into a Bar... to and why?

This was my first comedy audio book. I've since listened to other SNL cast members with books, but nothing comes close to Rachel Dratch's Girl Walks into a Bar. I laughed out loud, I cried and laughed at the same time and the whole time I felt like Rachel was in the room with me. I love her story, how she told it and I'm rooting for her.

Which character – as performed by Rachel Dratch – was your favorite?

ALL!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

From start to finish. I could not stop listening to this book.

Any additional comments?

I love you Rachel and wish you all the best!
