Publisher's summary

For decades, Fred Burton was a key figure in international counterterrorism and domestic spy craft. As a member of the State Department's Diplomatic Security Service in the mid 1980s, he was on the front lines of America's first campaign against terror. Now, in this hard-hitting memoir, Burton emerges from the shadows to reveal who he is, what he has accomplished, and the threats that lurk unseen except by an experienced, world-wise few. Told in a no-holds-barred, gripping, nuanced style, this behind-the scenes account of one counterterrorism agent's life and career is a riveting listen.

Great insight how the "Dark World"

Actually works..or seems to work. Fred Burton also touches on the emotional toll of that type of work... A very moving ending of the book.

Excellent!

This is the best description of counter-terrorism that I have ever read or heard. The author deserves kudos for his memoir as well as his career.

How it looks from the inside

Any additional comments?

The writing is a little wooden and sometimes repetitive. But the book isn't supposed to be entertaining for it's literary style, it's fascinating for the inside perspective delivered personally by the author.

It's as if Fred is sitting in the living room over a bourbon telling you all about it. It's a truly personal "confession".

I really enjoyed it.

Outstanding, informative and precise

This book does an excellent job in terms of providing readers with a glance into the intelligence Road and the fight against terrorism worldwide, with its many complexities, successes, and failures. The amount of detail is excellent, and conclusions are based on facts and experiences as opposed to speculation. I look forward to reading more from the author.

The Real Deal

Awesome careerography narrated like a 40's private investigator tale. Once you get past the suspicious feeling that some dame in a long red dress is going to saunter into the storyline, the content takes over and you get to experience history from an amazing viewpoint.

Intriguing Book!

Captivating book and well written by the author. Get a behind the scenes look of a DSS agent and a broad overview of the threats facing our great nation. Narration was good and I’ll be looking for mor books read by this narrator. I give it 5 stars!

Insight intoncounter terrorism, declassified

The politics, war and other topics are serious subjects. The authors description of the people dealing with high stress situations with humor and sarcasm reveals a way to make sanity out of an insne situation.

Great story of our history

As once a stratfor user, this brings me comfort knowing what I did made a difference and I love hearing it from Fred’s POV… whenever I’m in the DMV area, I get a Bethesda bagel like all Littles do🤓✌🏾

Excellent Read

I thoroughly enjoyed this. It's tough to turn it off and go to sleep, and when you do turn it off, you're likely to lay there thinking for a while. It can be very disturbing. I'm very grateful that we have these guys out there.
