On September 2, 2013, at the age of 64, Diana Nyad emerged onto the sands of Key West after swimming 111 miles, nation to nation, Cuba to Florida, in an epic feat of both endurance and human will, in 53 hours. Diana carried three poignant messages on her way across this stretch of shark-infested waters, and she spoke them to the crowd in her moment of final triumph:
Millions of people around the world cheered this maverick on, moved by her undeniable tenacity to be the first to make the historic crossing without the aid of a shark cage. At the end of her magnificent journey, after 35 years and four crushing failures, the public found hope in Diana's perseverance. They were inspired by her mantra - find a way - that led her to realize a dream in her 60s that had eluded her as a young champion in peak form.
In Find a Way, Diana engages us with a unique, passionate story of this heroic adventure and the extraordinary life experiences that have served to carve her unwavering spirit.
Diana was a world champion in her 20s, setting the record for swimming around Manhattan Island along with other ocean-swim achievements, all of which rendered her a star at the time. Back then, she made the first attempt at the Mount Everest of swims, the Cuba Swim, but after 42 hours and 79 miles she was blown desperately off course. Her dream unfulfilled, she didn't swim another stroke for three decades.

"Hearing [Nyad] tell her story in her own words adds another dimension to the endeavor, and the listener feels her single-minded dedication to her goal. Her description of the challenging circumstances she overcame early in her life is jarring, and makes her achievements even more impressive. Nyad also gives the listener glimpses of her mind while swimming by singing the songs that help her to maintain her stroke, counting in various languages, and yelping when stung by jellyfish." I am a middle school reading and English teacher, and parent of two teenagers. We live in Duluth Minnesota, and our whole family enjoys audiobooks.
I am a Nyad groupie, so this was a must-listen for me. Nyad telling her own story is key to this book, I think. Even though I have followed all of her attempts on-line, and seen the video of her finish several times, hearing her read about this moment still made me teary. Nyad is the most impressive example I know, other than Holocaust survivors of putting mind over matter and staying focused on your goals. Onward!
Loved every minute. Changed my life.
I recommend this for everyone- to live on a higher level - to really live.

Thank you for sharing your story, Diana. You are a fabulous role model and inspiration for women, like myself, who later in life continue to seek their dreams in sports.
This is such a beautiful book. if you're looking for inspiring story, this is the book you need to read. I love it so much that I'm buying the hardcover. you gotta have this book in your library. thank you for being so inspirational.
This is truly one of the best books I've ever read. It's a look into the heart and soul of a beautiful person who never gave up on her dreams and because of that has inspired me and many others to ask what is my dream and how can I live each day of my life "not a fingernail better". Thank you Diana Nyad for finding a way and for inspiring so many of us in the process.
This was such a great book! My mom and I listened to it on a long car drive, and we loved every minute of it. Diana will inspire you with her story and her unique storytelling narration. Enjoy!
What an exceptional book by an amazing woman. I loved every minute of it. I cannot fathom swimming in the dark of night out at sea, thinking of sharks, and all manner of prey. Then to be stung by deadly jellyfish and keep swimming! Diana gives life to the words never give up. Her team also never gives up and persevered. What amazing friends. This book makes me feel inspired.
I bought the audiobook after seeing Diana Nyad at a lecture series in Pittsburgh. The story of her life and the monumental efforts that she puts herself through are hard to imagine. I swim and cannot imagine swimming for that many hours and having the drive and will power to endure the pain and monotony.
An incredible, inspiring story of human will and desire to follow dreams. Loved that it's read by Diana herself as you can really feel her emotion and perspective.
Thoreau's 'Walden' and Ayn Rand's 25th anniversary introduction to 'The Fountainhead' summarize my library well.
"Find A Way" is a memoir that wins on multiple fronts, being:
- A technical breakdown of the lifelong training (40+ years!) that went into the now-famed Cuba Swim of 2013
- An intimate portrait of a woman coming to terms with who she is--and isn't--after experiencing unspeakable abuse as a child and teenager
- A forceful testimony to the power of dreams and determination
- A loving tribute to the people who Diana cherishes in her life
Diana spins the tale of her life with great love and craft: who would have guessed that her professional background in sports journalism and comparative literature would come to THIS end? Allusions to Cervantes, Homer, Melville and Jiminy Cricket throughout--all so very, very fitting.
The adrenaline rush of "Find A Way" puts this title on par with some of the best mountaineering titles I've read: "Into Thin Air," "Touching the Void," and the like. This book is a must-read for any survivor of childhood or teenage abuse. Nyad is a slam-dunk choice for narrator (re: journalism), her voice creating a very intimate experience between author and reader (the fact that she has lived to tell this tale is nearly a miracle in and of itself). If you love this title as much as I did it's worth picking up the hardcover which includes a wonderful photo spread, hand-drawn navigation maps from John Bartlett, training logs, and more.
From Nyad's website: "The toughest athlete in the world is a 62 year-old woman." (D.L. Stewart. Dayton Daily News) Jump into deep waters with "Find A Way" and I have no doubt that you will agree. Words fall short: this title is superb!
