Publisher's summary

Maverick author Hunter S. Thompson introduced the world to "gonzo journalism" with this cult classic that shot back up the best seller lists after Thompson's suicide in 2005. No book ever written has more perfectly captured the spirit of the 1960s counterculture. In Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race, Raoul Duke (Thompson) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (inspired by a friend of Thompson) are quickly diverted to search for the American dream. Their quest is fueled by nearly every drug imaginable and quickly becomes a surreal experience that blurs the line between reality and fantasy. But there is more to this hilarious tale than reckless behavior, for underneath the hallucinogenic facade is a stinging criticism of American greed and consumerism.

Poor narrating to an amazing story

Title says it all really. The narration is barely bearable but luckily Hunter's witty and captivating story telling makes it worth it.

Beautiful writer. Horrible person.

The story is interesting but full of loathing (go figure). The writing talent of Thompson is impressive considering how fried his brain must have been but God, he was a miserable person.

They should play this for kids

This has made me determined never to do drugs. Just listening to this will make you feel out of it. Though, that comes at the cost of being a bit hard to follow. Also the reader could do with making his Dr. Gonzo and Duke voices a bit more distinct.
Still an interesting listen.

Not a traditional book

Fear and loathing is an incredible book with a surprisingly deep dive into the end of the love generation and showcasing how far charisma, dumb luck and lies can get you in the 70's in Las vegas, it's not for the faint of heart nor is it for people who want a coherent story as the logic going through the 'protagonists' heads don't always have basis in reality yet it is constantly one of the most entertaining books on this app, I would highly recommend it to people who just watched the movie or someone looking for a hit peice/ understanding of the time period.

Not sure what the point is

I tried to give some more of Thompson a go with this book, but it was just absurd. All I wanted was Thompson and his lawyer to have their asses kicked.

Good God Ron!

I'm confused and so is the narrator, he gives the impression that H.S.T was a "wise guy" or something. sometimes gives the same characters a Californian stoner accent, then a few sentences later gives them a had Brooklyn Italian mobster accent. it would be comical if I didnt actually want to finish the book. Jesus Ron what were you thinking?
