Publisher's Summary

Brought up in a stiflingly traditional Muslim household in England, where the rules are enforced by violent punishments, Saira is watched 24 hours a day. Cut off from modern life, chaperoned to and from school, she is forbidden to have Western friends.

When an innocent friendship with a boy flourishes, one of Saira's brothers finds out and she is put on the first plane to Lahore, punished for dishonouring the family. There the nightmare really begins - Saira is forced to marry a stranger who makes it clear that all he wants from her is sex and a visa.

After a hair-raising escape back to England, she eventually returns to the family home, but as a virtual slave. Refusing to be beaten, she escapes once more, but with her parents in financial trouble and with one of her brothers running up huge drug debts, Saira is forced to earn money the only way she can: by selling her body.

Wracked with shame and guilt at having fallen into prostitution, Saira hits rock bottom, marries again and has a daughter who is the light of her life. Her husband, however, reveals himself to be a violent bully. After one beating too many, Saira flees with her baby daughter and sets about the harrowing ordeal of re-building their shattered lives.

    "Far better than I expected"

As soon as I started listening to this book I got sucked it. Far more than I ever expected to be. I found myself looking forward to a sneaky half an hour here or there when I could listen to a little more of the story
The reader complimented the story perfectly

    "Loved this book."

I loved this book for its honesty and the authors bravery. Yes it is gorey but she only tells it as it is, to gloss over the truth would be to deny it. The author is brave, honest and truthful. I applaud her.

    "mixed review."

an interesting tale and a true, well written story but it's a bit, well, gorey. there are a number of times i wish the author had not gone into such detail and these things have stayed with me and make me flinch even now.

not so much for the squeamish.

on the plus side, it's an insight into an alien world of forced marriages, complete female subjugation and slavery and desperation. it has given me nothing but contempt for the men involved and pity for the women. i wish i could say i understand why women allow such things to be propogated generation after generation but i cannot.
