Publisher's summary

Kim Miller is an immaculately put-together woman with a great career, a loving boyfriend, and a tidy apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. You would never guess that Kim grew up behind the closed doors of her family’s idyllic Long Island house, navigating between teetering stacks of aging newspapers, broken computers, and boxes upon boxes of unused junk festering in every room - the product of her father’s painful and unending struggle with hoarding. In this moving coming-of-age story, Kim brings to life her rat-infested home, her childhood consumed by concealing her father’s shameful secret from friends, and the emotional burden that ultimately led to an attempt to take her own life. And in beautiful prose, Miller sheds light on her complicated yet loving relationship with her parents that has thrived in spite of the odds.

Coming Clean is a story about recognizing where we come from and the relationships that define us - and about finding peace in the homes we make for ourselves.

Repeat, repeat...

I struggled to finish. I got the point. Horder, horder, horder, got it. The story never did more than describe the mess.

Well written!

This book was laid out so well! I was visualizing it as a movie and able to empathize with her and her parents.

Hoarders

I know a couple of hoarders. Kimberley's accounting of her experiences were fascinating and honest. The legal and social consequences are enormous for the families of hoarders.

Sad

How very sad. The mental illnesses that inflict us are so sad. They effect our family along with us. I never realized the torment the family has to go through. The shame the afflicted goes through. I self sorry for both. Blame could not be given to the afflicted or the family dealing with the problem.

Honest, Eye-Opening, Loving, and Humorous

Kimberly Rae Miller's open, honest, and yet still loving depiction of what it was like to grow up with a compulsive hoarder. Her story is painful but she has a great sense of humor about it and shares it in a way that really pulled me in. She narrates it herself, and she's great at it. I'm looking forward to reading more of her work.

A wonderful story of a daughter's love.

At first I thought this was fiction then as the story went on I realized this woman was living her life over to share her story. This was an amazing book on hoarding and told with love. Kim is a amazing writer and I loved her narration of the book. Her voice told you more of the story than just reading the words. Thank you for sharing your life. I will forever think of hoarders with a different understanding.

tremendously compelling

This is a tremendously compelling, often difficult to listen to story told by the author. It must have been painful for her to write and perform, but it offers insight into hoarders, and how their habits profoundly affect those who love them.

I'm glad I bought this book.

I felt sympathy and shock.

Her dad is a high level, out of control hoarder. Her mom throws in the towel and joins him. Kim reads her well told story in a sweet toned voice. I really enjoyed her voice. I wanted them all to escape their fate. I was engaged and absorbed. Well done Kim

Beautiful memoir

I loved this memoir. Touching, sad, inspiring, and very well written! Gives great insight into hoarding, but more importantly shows you the love that exists in this family.
