As a fan of true mafia crime stories, this one is top flight. This is not written by a rat, but by one of the last stand up guys from the heyday of organized crime. His discussion of the Kennedy assasination is particularly compelling.
I found this book very entertaining. I especially enjoyed Bill's voice as the narrator. His perspective on the Kennedy killings was quite captivating. Although I felt he held some things back to protect himself, I am surprised by the information he did reveal about a secret world about which many do not know or understand.
I loved Bill's candidness.
I thought the Kennedy stuff was interesting. I'd heard a bit of it by the family in the past but finally got details.
I have met Bill a few times and it is true to his nature.
I am looking for more books on the Bonanno family, by the family.
This book really gives you the inside of a secret society and the need for it centuries ago.
I did not read the print version.
I have listened to several hundred audio books in the last few years. I think this is the best narration I ever heard. Great voice, really delivers a beautiful story. Describes characters by their actions, which is a rare talent but makes the characters more real and understandable. After I was finished listening the first time, I listened again a second time. I just didn't want to put the book down!
Don't think it would need a tag line.
I hope this is only volume one of twenty five.
The story was very interesting. The fact that the story was written and read by the Son made listening even more enjoyable!
After years of hearing various accounts of the "mob's" help in getting President Kennedy elected, it was facinating to hear Mr. Bonanno's account of that issue.
Mr. Bonanno's inside view of the Mafia is quite different from what you read or have read in press accounts.
I have read many books and have seen many movies about the history of the Mafia. This book not only answered many questions but revealed a true insight on the structure and history of the Mafia.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was a fascinating insight into the old world of the mafia. I'm just blown away that the answer to the Kennedy assassinations is in this book and yet still people are debating the conspiracy theories. I just couldn't put my ipod down and spent a whole day listening to this from the beginning to the end. Without a doubt this is one of the best audio books that I've listened to.
"Not quite what I was expecting"
I have read another book by Bill Bonanno (The Good Guys) and was very impressed by the humerous accounts of life in the Italian American Mafia as well as the NY Police, however I found this latest read a little more slow paced. I will give it 3 stars as there were some interesting tales of some well known Mafia stories that I felt added some authenticity.
"illuminating and interesting"
This book rings true and is well considered and well presented. Anyone interested in the Mafia will, I think, find this book interesting and illuminating. It gives an historic overview of the mob from its beginning to its fairly recent demise in America at least, as well as giving the author's own story within the mob. It also gives a convincing explanation of the mob's part in the rise of President John Kennedy and in his assasination.
