Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential - Witty, finely-crafted, and meant to be heard, Bossypants is one of my favorite audiobooks of all time. Tina Fey knows how to deliver a good punch-line – and does so hilariously throughout her memoir. Her self-deprecating humor shines through, and this half-memoir, half-stand-up routine left me laughing for all in the subway car to hear. From her days in the Second City comedy troupe, to Saturday Night Live, to Hollywood, Fey's stories and memories will leave you in stitches. —Jess

Publisher's Summary

Before Liz Lemon, before "Weekend Update", before "Sarah Palin", Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV.

She has seen both of those dreams come true.

At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live; from her passionately halfhearted pursuit of physical beauty to her life as a mother eating things off the floor; from her one-sided college romance to her nearly fatal honeymoon - from the beginning of this paragraph to this final sentence.

Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we've all suspected: you're no one until someone calls you bossy.

Includes special, never-before-solicited opinions on breastfeeding, princesses, Photoshop, the electoral process, and Italian rum cake!

"I love you Tina, but this book is a little off"
    Any additional comments?

I'm a huge fan of Tina Fey's work -- particularly 30 Rock and Mean Girls -- and I was eager to hear more from one of the best comedians alive today. But there were some things about the book that rubbed me the wrong way. In particular, I found the part of the book where she talks about her time playing Sarah Palin for six weeks on SNL surprisingly guarded and defensive -- the chapter reads like she's trying to fend off criticism from right wingers and left wingers alike by taking a comically measured approach (luckily, they play the entire sketch in the audiobook, which is a nice reminder of how funny and pointed she can be when she's less worried about crazy people attacking her for her politics). She's also reflexively self-deprecating, which seems dishonest coming from one of the biggest comedy stars out there right now. That being said, I loved the stuff about her high school theater camp, every time she talks about Amy Poehler, the trip up Old Rag Mountain, and her daughter, Alice. I didn't like the stuff about how she loves white guys (I get what she's trying to do, but it's not padded out enough to not seem a little racist), and I wish she had gone more in depth about her personal life during her Second City and SNL days -- it seems like her husband Jeff is very private (I don't blame him) but I was so curious about what it was like being involved with someone she's also worked professionally with her entire career.

"For the business woman with an edge"
Where does Bossypants rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

As a man Bossypants started out as a run of the mill audiobook. However as I listened to the book it became aware that I would highly recommend this book to my mother and my sisters. While the book did not appeal to me, I can appreciate Tina Fey’s struggles as a female comedian trying to break into the male dominated world of comedy.

What about Tina Fey’s performance did you like?

Tina Fey’s performance was good in Bossypants. Her stories were amplified by the passion that I could hear in here voice as she recounted each one. The book might not be for everyone as she become more passionate while talking about her sometimes liberal and feministic view point. Given the adversity she was going up against and the balancing act of being a mother and a professional, it is easy to see why she leans the way she does. If you approach this book with an open mind this book is filled with great insight and enough humor to keep you engaged from start to finish.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Strong woman, strong humor

The Sound quality was off compared to others.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Their were times the story line felt off pace.

Do you think Bossypants needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes, I feel like their are more wonderful stories she could tell us to make us laugh.

I enjoy historical fiction, sci-fi and some fantasy. After listening to multiple books in a series, I like to sprinkle in a biography or two

Unfortunately this book is neither funny, nor informative. I wanted to like it, but whenever you'd think she'd reveal something insightful about the business she's working in, or her view of life in general, she proceeds to make light of it right away, as if she never meant the prior sentence at all.

Would you consider the audio edition of Bossypants to be better than the print version?

Without a doubt. Tina Fey adds her own style to the reading that brings the book to life in a way that I couldn't have done reading by myself. She also sounds like she's having a conversation more than reading a book out loud. This connection to the book made it worth so much more to me.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Bossypants?

Her description of the white jeans pants suit. Everyone has that one outfit that you put on and you feel DAMN GOOD. Even if it's out of style. I still have my version of that same thing.

What does Tina Fey bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

How she reads it puts her personality in the words. The words are jam packed with her personality, don't get me wrong, but her reading style makes it clear what she wants you to get from the book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Probably when she described the not-so-secret sexism in her job. I experience something similar with my work, engineering, but no one out and out says it. Sometimes the looks and the comments get to me and it was great to hear I'm not alone. And there are women with balls of steel who don't take it like it is.

    Any additional comments?

100% would buy/read it again. And I highly recommend this to everyone, especially women who are concerned with being taken seriously in the workplace.

Would you listen to Bossypants again? Why?

Bossypants is a great listen and good life/laugh fix.

What does Tina Fey bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Obviously her voice. If I read in my own voice, well I'd be bored of me too.

    "Funny!"
If you could sum up Bossypants in three words, what would they be?

    Totally F-ing Funny

What was one of the most memorable moments of Bossypants?

Her description of being a parent is really funny, especially the way she describes the total mania most moms feel and how every decision feels like life or death. Breast/Bottle, work/stay home, how to not go crazy and ruin your kids.

"Tina Fey is the whole package!"
Would you listen to Bossypants again? Why?

Tina Fey is so funny! Of course, I've seen her SNL skits and 30 Rock, so this is a great, entertaining autobiography to hear about the woman behind it all. She takes you from her childhood to her days at SNL and 30 Rock. Great sense of humor, introspection, and very engaging!

What does Tina Fey bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

There are a lot of so-so narrators with audiobooks and even some of the narrators who are the authors of the book aren't that great. Tina Fey is the exception. She's got a fantastic sense of humor, wit, and honest insight.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh pretty much the entire time I was listening to it.
