Publisher's summary

Spirited and whip-smart, these laugh-out-loud autobiographical essays are "a masterpiece" from the Emmy Award-winning actress and comedy writer known for 30 Rock, Mean Girls, and SNL". (Sunday Telegraph).

Before Liz Lemon, before Weekend Update, before Sarah Palin, Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: A recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true.

At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live; from her passionately halfhearted pursuit of physical beauty to her life as a mother eating things off the floor; from her one-sided college romance to her nearly fatal honeymoon - from the beginning of this paragraph to this final sentence.

Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we've always suspected: You're no one until someone calls you bossy.

Includes special, never-before-solicited opinions on breastfeeding, princesses, Photoshop, the electoral process, and Italian rum cake!

Editor's Pick: Best of the Decade

Tina Fey wears the pants
"I still remember the first time I listened to Bossypants in 2011. I was a recent college grad and my tastes were embarrassingly snobby, but I liked Tina Fey and thought it would just be soooo subversive to listen to a best seller. Imagine my shock when Bossypants showed me how much pure, uncomplicated joy I could get from a book. I never looked back. Before Tina Fey we had Carol Burnett, Lucille Ball, and Joan Rivers, but Bossypants came at just the right moment when the floodgates were opening for women in comedy. Its best seller status made Tina Fey a household name and paved the way for excellent (hilarious) memoirs that would follow by Mindy Kaling, Amy Poehler, Tiffany Haddish, Ali Wong, and so many more. Bossypants launched a cultural phenomenon. What I love best about Tina Fey’s book is her voice, both figuratively and literally. It's a joy to spend five and a half straight hours in her brain, hearing her perspective on comedy, career, and crushes gone awry. The audiobook's use of clips from Saturday Night Live was also revolutionary and elevated this memoir to a whole new level. No matter which comedy memoir I end up falling in love with next, Bossypants will always hold a special place in my heart as the first—and the decade’s best."—Rachel S., Audible Editor

Love Tina Fey!!!

Would you listen to Bossypants again? Why?

Yes I would. She has a great sense of humor and having Tina read her own book is perfect. Its nice to have every sarcastic comment in her voice!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Bossypants?

I love her talking about when she worked in a Chicago YMCA. I work at a Y and it is so funny to hear her take on it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes it was hard to stop listening to her. And I listen to books at work so I found my self laughing out loud and people looking at me funny.

Tina Fey is amazing!!

I am so sad that I have finished this book. Every day as I read this book, I could not WAIT to get into my car for some more alone time with Tina. I have listened to many many audio books. This is the first time that I ever felt that the audiobook MUST be better than reading the hardcopy. I was so excited to share this book with family and friends that I went out and bought several hardcovers to pass around. When I read through the hardcopy, so many of Tina's clever jokes and turns of phrase were lost when I was left to my own devices. Her intonations and improv skills come shining through in the reading. The only reason to buy the book (text) is for the pictures, I think. (So I have both!) This is a must read for anyone who needs a laugh or just wants to laugh. It may be more interesting to women (sorry Tina....that kind of defeats the purpose of many of your premises), but I can't be sure. (My husband put it down after the first few pages. But after he heard me non-stop laughing for three days, he said he is going to give it another whirl. Congratulations Tina Fey. I wish your book had been 10 hours long...but I suppose that would have just increased your stress induced mouth sores. I wouldn't want you to do that just for me.
Wish I could have you for dinner just once!!

A great first listen

Would you listen to Bossypants again? Why?

Eventually, yes, but there are probably chapters I'd skip the next time.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

30 Rock, The Movie

Any additional comments?

Picked this one up from the "Your First Listen" recommendation when I signed up and was not disappointed. Tina Fey is hilarious and has a talent for finding humor in the mundane, and turning the truly funny into a side-splitting tale.

I've never laughed this hard in traffic

I bought this book after randomly listening to the sample. I'm so glad I did. I don't think I've ever laughed as hard listening to an audio book. Tina Fey is an amazing story teller. I loved it.

You'll laugh & suddenly feel like watching titanic

Now I know why Tina Fey was able to create so many amusing and wacky character's in her hit show 30 Rock - she's known some interesting characters her whole life. From her flat footed dad, to the guy who constantly repeated his life story and always ended it with a reminder to wear a helmet, to the two lesbians in their 20's who Tina was best friends with in High School, Tina Fey has known it all and seen it all. And all these zany people and strange life experiences have made her who she is: a ridiculously talented and funny women (with flat feet.)

Listening to Bossy Pants was awesome because you get to hear Tina Fey retell her book as if it were a fond memory or a secret journal entry. And as a bonus you also get to hear the hilarious sketch she did with Amy Poehler on SNL (the one where Tina masterfully cloned Sarah Palin and Amy nailed the role of Hillary Clinton). To this day that sketch will make you laugh out loud in public as you listen to Bossy Pants on the bus and receive funny stares from the people around you.

But you won't care because like Tina Fey proudly declares - and no I'm not referring to the time when as a kid she yells "I am the boss! I am the boss!" - but to the moments throughout the book where she talks about what she thinks about her body image, her haters, the topic of plastic surgery and even photoshop: you just won't care in the end.

Tina brilliantly conveys the message that you shouldn't feel awkward, embarrassed, or ashamed of being you! So go ahead and own it like a boss as you strive to accomplish something as small as a trip to the beach without feeling self-conscious or large as your life goals.

Really good

Tina Fey is beautiful, fun, smart and talented. Her narration of her own life is truly wonderful. The audio book also gives you snips from shows. These two things make purchasing the audio book a no-brainer.

The reason for the four starts instead of five is comedy, no matter how wonderful, drags at times - especially in large doses. Specifically, I found myself skipping ahead during the swirl around her Sarah Palin impressions, her attempt at breastfeeding and her advice to women on beauty in Hollywood. ( I have to add, this was likely an it-isn't-the-book,-it-is-me thing, as those items don't particularly strike a cord with me.) The 75%+ of the book that I listened to was delightful, funny and, at times, thought provoking.

Tina did good. I hope she writes and narrates another book at some point.
