Publisher's summary

A poetic immersion into the life and art of Joan Mitchell, the great American abstract expressionist painter.

A contemporary of Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, Joan Mitchell is not as well-known as her male counterparts, not only because she was a woman, but also because she spent most of her working life in France. Still, in 2013, Bloomberg listed Mitchell as the best-selling female artist of all time.

When asked to talk about her paintings, Joan Mitchell often responded, "If I could say it in words, I'd write a book." Here is her book. At once unique and universal, Blue Territory is at its core an exploration of love and life, and what it means to love - and live - what you do. Meticulously researched and lyrically written, it will appeal to anyone interested in passionate engagement with the world.

Define interpretation

I am on my third listen to this divine interpretation of Joan’s life. I have such an expanded view of her as a human. Not sure if the authors took artistic license, but it brought her to life!

A breeze in blue

This is a good book! Without dragging through pages of dry brush the author keeps the story moving and gives a wonderful overview of this painter's journey. The readers voice is clear and on target. I listened twice and will do so again. Now, with an understanding of Joan Mitchell, I appreciate her paintings all the more. Thank You.

WH pronunciation pet peeve.

this book is really engaging and it gives you an amazing inside of Joan's process. The narrator does a great job at adding depth to the words, they are profound and poetic but OMG. she pronounces white, while, wheet in the most annoying way. 🤣 just a heads up.

Really worth the listen!

I really liked this reading and the narrated does a very nice job of setting forth the poetic content and context of this work. I have listened to it three times and will be listening again. It’s like a visit with the subject ❤️
