Fredrickson's short book is an excellent and highly readable contribution to Lincoln scholarship. He gives a thorough overview of the scholarly debate that has raged for many years over Lincoln's attitude to both slavery and white supremacy, and he argues persuasively for his view that Lincoln was evolving in his thinking right up to the time of his assassination. Moreover Frederickson does this with an economy of words that makes his work particularly memorable.
