Publisher's summary

“Tells the tales left untold by Stephen Ambrose, whose Band of Brothers was the inspiration for the HBO miniseries…laced with Winters’s soldierly exaltations of pride in his comrades’ bravery.”—Publishers Weekly

In war, great commanders lead soldiers into hell to do the impossible.

They were called Easy Company—but their mission was never easy. Immortalized as the Band of Brothers, they suffered huge casualties while liberating Europe in an unparalleled record of bravery under fire. Dick Winters led them through the Battle of the Bulge, the attack on Foy—where Easy Company reached its breaking point—and finally into Germany, by which time each member had been wounded. Outside Munich, they liberated an SS death camp and captured Berchtesgaden, Hitler’s alpine retreat.

Beyond Band of Brothers is Winters’s memoir, based on his wartime diary, but it also includes his comrades’ untold stories. Only Winters was present from the activation of Easy Company until the war’s end. This is their story, told in his words for the first time.

Great for fans or history buffs

I have watched the Band of Brothers miniseries multiple times. Winter’s personal account provides the listener with more depth and background details about himself and his soldiers. The book was engaging and I could hardly press pause.

Amazing Story of Leadership

This book fills in a lot of the details from Band of Brothers and is worth reading for this fact alone. However, the real gems are found in Dick's insight into his decision-making and leadership style. How such a young man could be so mature is incredible! Dick's character and discipline allowed him to achieve the pinnacle of leadership - men would follow him because of who he was, what he represented, and how he cared for them. This is a brilliant book!

Won’t disappoint BoB fans!

If you’re like me, and have watched the mini series countless times, this book will fill in a few gaps, add critical detail, and verify how closely Steven Ambrose followed the actual events of Easy Company. Hearing this book from Winter’s perspective was amazing. I’ll read it again.

The narrator is terrible on a few levels though, so be warned. He mispronounced several prominent names. That’s inexcusable to me! He also tries to do voices and that’s incredibly annoying since he really doesn’t have the vocal range to pull them off. Had he stuck to just reading it and getting names right, I’d have given him five stars. I may read the paper book next time! 😜

Must Read

We too often take for granted the freedom we enjoy as a result of the sacrifices of the veterans of WWII. This book demonstrates the amazing accomplishments achieved from outstanding leadership, personal dedication, and courage by the men of Easy Company, a true band of brothers. It helped me to better understand my father’s contributions as a SeeBee in the South Pacific. Thank you, veterans!

great listening

Having watched the mini series, and read the book. I enjoyed listening to Major Winters words. Having served in the Army myself l understand his views of the way men and women who have been through battle bond together.
