Publisher's summary

If you think you know George Washington, think again.

This is the amazing true story of a real-life superhero who wore no cape and possessed no special powers—yet changed the world forever. It's a story about a man whose life reads as if it were torn from the pages of an action novel: Bullet holes through his clothing. Horses shot out from under him. Unimaginable hardship. Disease. Heroism. Spies and double-agents. And, of course, the unmistakable hand of Divine Providence that guided it all.

Being George Washington is a whole new way to look at history. You won't simply read about the awful winter spent at Valley Forge—you'll live it right alongside Washington. You'll be on the boat with him crossing the Delaware, in the trenches with him at Yorktown, and standing next to him at the Constitutional Convention as a new republic is finally born.

Through these stories you'll not only learn our real history (and how it applies to today), you'll also see how the media and others have distorted our view of it. It's ironic that the best-known fact about George Washington—that he chopped down a cherry tree—is a complete lie. It's even more ironic when you consider that a lie was thought necessary to prove he could not tell one.

For all of his heroism and triumphs, Washington's single greatest accomplishment was the man he created in the process: courageous and principled, fair and just, respectful to all. But he was also something else: flawed.

It's those flaws that should give us hope for today. After all, if Washington had been perfect, then there would be no way to build another one. That's why this book is not just about being George Washington in 1776, it's about the struggle to be him every single day of our lives. Understanding the way he turned himself from an uneducated farmer into the Indispensable (yet imperfect) Man, is the only way to build a new generation of George Washingtons that can take on the extraordinary challenges that America is once again facing.

The story of a role model for all of humanity.

“Being George Washington” is a story that is mostly focused on the Revolutionary War and the founding of the United States and our Constitution but is also a narrative of the life and inner soul of one of the greatest men to have ever lived on earth. No one can help not to revere him for what he did for this great nation, the United States, and the example he is for every leader of all nations. Glenn Beck illustrates how George Washington’s way of life can be an example of how people, regardless of their circumstances or state of being can better themselves, and live a more fruitful life.

Ron McLarty narrated the Audio Book in a way that brings all the characters to life in a way that holds one’s interest in anticipation of how the next part of the story will unfold.

Like being there

Would you listen to Being George Washington again? Why?

Yes. I have listened to it twice already and will listen to it again. Performance is excellent and the content is outstanding. Better than a history book.

What other book might you compare Being George Washington to and why?

Haven't read or listened to anything that compares. Glenn's comments throughout the book about "Being George Washington" are inspiring.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was in awe of the story of George Washington, the man. The dramatization of the accounts in the book made the story enjoyable without detracting from the facts. Whenever there are inconsistencies in the accounts or if historians are not sure of how certain things happened, it is pointed out so as not to be presented as the complete truth.

Any additional comments?

This book was written in a fashion where the reader/listener can live the story and relate to such a great founding father. He was fallible and above reproach at the same time. I listened to this book right after a trip to Philadelphia and the surrounding area. Having just visited Valley Forge, Christ Church in Philadelphia and Constitution Hall and walking the grounds, I listened to the story of the struggles and triumphs that happened there. Sure wish I had listened before the trip.

More Than a Book of History

What made the experience of listening to Being George Washington the most enjoyable?

As a student of history, it provided details about the events surrounding General/President Washington the I was not aware. But what makes Being George Washington unique, is Author Beck's take on Washington's character in dealing with circumstances.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Being George Washington?

The several accounts throughout the work of Providence sparing Washington to fulfill his life's purpose.

What about Ron McLarty’s performance did you like?

His voice ... it is both pleasing and engaging.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Along with other works on Washington, it further reinforced George Washington as the greatest President, and Father of the Country by his precedences on defining the Presidency. Lesser men would have been tempted to let vanity overtake service to others. For example, had he been so inclined, he could have taken advantage of his popularity to pursue kingdom instead of presidency.

Any additional comments?

Highly recommend Being George Washington especially to patriots who love and serve Our Country. It reinforces some of the reasons they do what they do.

Accurate History Told as a Great Story

Would you listen to Being George Washington again? Why?

I already have! And I have even bought the book to share with family and friends. Most memorable you finish with a new appreciation for the wonderful uniqueness that is The United States of America. You realize the fight for keeping the liberties and freedoms of this country is a battle of the ages from days after the Revolution to today. This book looks at the heart and soul of many players of the time. Interestingly, even Napoleon who although was a traitor, this book unpacks what lead up to his scheming. He is not painted all evil. Napoleon started out sincere and the best of the best. The book stops you for a minute to question what would you do? If situations were switched would even Washington fall into that pit? Interesting!!!!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. Sometimes I do and you certainly could! However this story is so full of true events and retrospective moments you want to remember and savor it.

Any additional comments?

I think this is a superb book for young people too. History should be told in compelling stories without a lot of fictionalization. Beck adds details well researched and true to the times. You can trust this author. Most over this book leaves you with appreciation and desire to be a part of this country we are privileged to call home.

Inspiring

Civility, honor, convictions, determination, humility, righteousness, self sacrifice are all things that not only seem rare in our modern culture but are rarely often found in our "public servants". This book gave some great insight into the man behind the legend, and has challenged me to live more like this man and more importantly like the Saviour, Jesus Christ, who gave us the ultimate example through the ultimate sacrifice. For human heros I have found that Washington cannot be topped. A mere humble man with standards and humility met divine providence and the greatest country was spared ruin...a least for a while. We have been given a republic...the question, as Benjamin Franklin stated "A republic, if you can keep it". Will we keep it or will we squander the sacrifice of Washington and so many others? Only time will tell, but I am resolved to live more like Washington in my corner of the USA today, and pray God spares us a bit longer.
