When anyone can start a business (when everyone is running their career like a business), it begs a question. This is your one chance at life, you can have anything you want, what is worth doing?
Most people don't know why they're doing what they're doing. They imitate others, go with the flow, and follow paths without making their own.
They spend decades in pursuit of something that someone convinced them they should want, without realizing that it won't make them happy.
Anything You Want is a manifesto about living life, appreciating enough, and doing what matters. It's most of what fabled entrepreneur Derek Sivers learned in ten years of starting and growing a small business, compacted into something you can listen to in an hour and a half. A life worth living starts with knowing your personal philosophy of what makes you happy and what's worth doing.

I like this book so much. Short, sincere and very meaningful. A scarce valuable resource in today's digital media world of non-stop interruptions. I have become Derek's fan because of his concisely meaningful communication style.
This book is set to change lives. The way I look at business will never be the same again.
It helped reinforce a clearer intention in me about what I am about to set out to do in this world. It taught me how to look outside of me, and business is about creating my perfect Utopia.
And I hear the message loud and clear: Never forget why I am starting my business. It will definitely keep my focus right in the days of the dawn and the nights of the darkest storm.
I am definitely going to listen to this book a few more times, and plan to buy the hardcover one for collection and reference.
Thank you for a wonderful book, Derek. I can't wait for the next one.
passionate reader & writer
Sivers reminds you that even very successful business people make big mistakes and inspires you to go easy yourself. A failure is not a failure. It's a discovery of yet another way things don't work.
This has come at the perfect time for me although I will say I also could have used it years ago. I am an entrepreneur in a very competitive business. I have been doing this for 15 years and still love parts of it. The parts that drove me in the early days are the ones I spend the least time doing these days and I find myself thinking about selling out. Even though we just had our best back to back years ever. It is time for me to get back to the things I love doing and get away from sitting at my desk answering endless emails and addressing streams of happiness-numbing paperwork. I bought this audiobook immediately after listening to Derek on Tim Ferriss' podcast. Which I only heard because I was on a long drive and the podcast I wanted to listen to ended and this one queued up right after despite my attempts to find my glasses while driving at night, so I could find a podcast that I really wanted to listen to. One of those small moments that take you some where you didn't know you were going. Like Derek's early road to being a paid musician (again, see -- listen to? Tim Ferris podcast). A must listen for any new OR old(er) entrepreneur.
I'm so glad that I listened to this audiobook. Derek conveys so much wisdom in short order. He truly "gets it" and I think every person who is involved in entrepreneurship or just a personal venture of some sort stands to gain alot from this book. Highest of recommendations!
This was amazing. I have listened to it 15 times.
I did. And I could because it was quick and easy.
Derek is a trailblazer... I hope he writes more.
After listening to this book I really want to make friends with Derek with Derek. He sounds like a great person that would be inspirational to hangout with. This book has very good advice on starting and running a business or running life.
really easy to consume audio book that removes all the fluff and gives you exactly what you're looking for. dereks delivery is great and made me want to listen to everything in one sitting. highly recommend
I don't know what the signature does.
In 2008, Derek Sivers, a musician / circus clown sold his business CD Baby for 22 million and donated most of the proceeds.
The story of how he learned to program, built his business, and ran his innovative company is worth the price of the book.
It's a story of success, failure, reinvention, struggles, innovation and practical advice and philosophy that you can use in your own life.
I read this book years ago and some of the lessons still stick with me.
Derek has since gone on to give Ted Talks & appear on the Tim Ferriss Podcast.
Derek's message in this book about being content with what you have and not gripping so hard to accomplishing more is a refreshing look at how to succeed but also how to enjoy the journey even if you don't hit your goals.
"Short but could be Sweeter!"
This book was less than two hours and promised 40 lessons for the new entrepreneur. I was not counting and there might have been. However, the lessons were sometimes a little basic. I thought these lessons could have been more profound.
The audio book was well narrated by the author and the book is basically about his success. The narration was good, I was a little disappointed that Mr Sivers did not appear to consider women for his business in the early days.
Overall, short but could be a lot sweeter.
"Really enjoyed this book."
Concise and entertaining lessons learned from a business owner whose methods are often counterintuitive. Will definitely be listening to this more than once.
Derek has this extremely NOT CONVENTIONAL way to be a great leader.. Just for himself. And it turns out he has made A HUGE IMPACT for millions of people! Way to go. I will listen to this book again and again. Thank you!
I liked the honesty. I think if you listen you should try to turn off any internal curation or filter for what is said as it's a factual account of someone else life. It doesn't need judgement, it's just very very interesting.
Talking about how his dad accidentally owned 90% of his business and due to a tax loophole could not discharge the business for less than an independently achieved valuation.
I've never even heard of Derek before reading a tweet today. He's engaging, interesting and has a refreshing outlook on life
Personal stories can be so emotive, especially if you listen then your brain starts the what-if process... When Derek fired someone I had to take a moment; it's something I've had to experience and something I've done as a business owner; I really felt for both parties.
Really amazing; would recommend to anyone, have already shared the link to a lot of people on facebook.
"Refreshing entrepreneur story"
Loved this audiobook because the author tells a story of how he grew and sold a company for $20m, but there is none of the typical business advice. Derek silvers didn't care about corporate systems, investors, capitalism or even money. All he cared about was serving a specific group of people and he tells the story of how he did it in his own way. And the story is brilliantly read by the author.
"My most listened to business book"
Easily listened to, no rambling but not rushed.... One of the best business books available because it just tells his story and doesn't waste 5 hours of repetition.... Or more
The story of the despatch of the cd on the silk cushion... Brilliant
"Sivers is an inspiration "
Derek Sivers is a truly inspiring human being. If I were asked, "who springs to mind if you think of success," Derek is that man. This book contains the secrets of that success, and it's all surprisingly simple; all so easy to act upon. It's short, yet dense with insight. Humble, imaginative, honest and charming. Worth listening to again and again and again, especially as it's read so beautifully by the author himself.
Interesting fun narration. like author being honest about his mistakes. you may be able to pick few ideas which would suit your business life
