Soon it becomes unclear what tics are symptoms of his disease and what are side effects of the drugs. The only certainty is that it keeps getting worse. Despite his lack of control, Cory is aware of every embarrassing movement, and sensitive to every person's reaction to his often aggravating presence. Simply put: Cory Friedman's life is a living hell.
Against Medical Advice is the true story of Cory and his family's decades-long battle for survival in the face of extraordinary difficulties and a maddening medical establishment. It is a heart-rending story of struggle and triumph with a climax as dramatic as any James Patterson thriller.

"Against Medical Advice is both harrowing and heartbreaking, but is also a story of astonishing courage. This book stands as a testament to the amazing power of one family's unconditional love for each other." (Tess Gerritsen)
This story made me realize how we always reach for a pill to make us feel better when it may really be making us even more ill. This was a triumphant story of a parent's love and a child's pain.
This book was a little difficult to listen to. It opened a window into a troubled mind and body in a very poignant way. It also was most helpful, especially if there is someone in your family or close circle of friends that suffers a similar affliction.
This is a terrific true story of triumph
When his life began to turnaround
Great insight to a very tough disease
59 y/o Dad of 3, widowed from best friend ever, and retired from my long and tiring practice of law.Visually impaired, have enjoyed readings
MY son has a severe case of Tourette's Syndrome, which has extended into adulthood. This book, although the writer seemed to improve as he aged, helped me to understand so many of the comments and explanations that my son had tried to share with me over the years. I had it too--and still do at time, but never as severely as my son or as the author of this book. But what they have said has helped me understand the disease and the comorbidity with other illnesses such as ADHD and OCD, many times more clearly, in combination, than any way I have ever heard it before.
Thanks to the author and his agreement to share his story for the better good of helping others understand and hopefully working toward some treatment or at least an understanding of the illness.
It was most selfless, and I for one, have great admiration for him.
This is truly a heart warming and inspiring story of a remarkable family! My family is going through some difficult times with one child (21) having high anxiety and OCD and another (23) being bi-polar. Then of course myself having MDD. This kind of information is invaluable! Thank you to Corey's family for telling it and to Corey for never giving up!
I had heard great things about this book on various radio programs. I purchased it, yet it took me a while to decide to read it. Once I started, I was sorry I waited so long. It was a fascinating read and keep my interest to the point I was unable to turn it off. Not only did I listen in the car, but also took it in and finished it up in the hotel room! I would recommend this book to anyone that has or has known someone with medical issues!
Very well written book. I could not stop listening to it.
I really felt a lot of emotions. A lot of sympathy for everything this family had to go through.
This is a story about a family that has great strength and determination.
