Audible Editor Reviews

On April 6, 1974, Swedish pop band Abba performed their hit "Waterloo" on the televised Eurovision Contest. Elisabeth Vincentelli, then nine years old, was hooked. Nearly 20 years later, Vincentelli wrote her love letter to the band, focusing on its hit compilation album, ABBA Gold.

Enthusiastically performed by Christina Moore, this audiobook - the seventh installment in Bloomsbury’s 33 1/3 series - weaves personal narrative with close readings and background details of the songs, including "Take a Chance on Me" and their indelible classic, "Dancing Queen". This audiobook is great fun for any Abba fan or '70s music lover. One only wishes the audiobook included the music.

Publisher's Summary

Perhaps more than any other Greatest Hits compilation, Abba Gold has come to define a band's career on one disk. More than that, its release in 1992 heralded the critical rehabilitation of a group which had, since its demise a decade earlier, become little more than a memory of trashy costumes and cheesy tunes to many people.

Here, Elisabeth Vincentelli charts the circumstances surrounding the birth of Abba Gold, looks at the impact it had on the music world, and tells the stories behind some of the greatest pop songs ever recorded.

Rock on: listen to more of the 33 1/3 series.

Interesting overview of a the ultimate ABBA compilation album. It explains how the album came into existence and why it is so successful.
