Publisher's summary

When Haven Kimmel was born in 1965, Mooreland, Indiana, was a sleepy little hamlet of 300 people. Nicknamed "Zippy" for the way she would bolt around the house, this small girl was possessed of big eyes and even bigger ears. In this witty and lovingly told memoir, Kimmel takes readers back to a time when small-town America was caught in the amber of the innocent postwar period - people helped their neighbors, went to church on Sunday, and kept barnyard animals in their backyards.

Laced with fine storytelling, sharp wit, dead-on observations, and moments of sheer joy, Haven Kimmel's straight-shooting portrait of her childhood gives us a heroine who is wonderfully sweet and sly as she navigates the quirky adult world that surrounds Zippy.

Critic reviews

"Filled with good humor, fine storytelling, and acute observations of small-town life." (Library Journal)
"Kimmel's smooth, impeccably humorous prose evokes her childhood as vividly as any novel." (Publishers Weekly)
"Almost dreamlike in some of [her] elusive storytelling, [Kimmel] pulls off a feat that's harder than it looks: write for adults from a child's perspective...Zippy's parents must have done something right to produce a girl who could write such a simple and lovely book." (USA Today)

A brilliant depiction of childhood!

Kimmel provides a vivid account of her experiences in a household with a Quaker mother and nonconformist father in a quiet, rural community. She brings back the wonder of childhood, with the reality of human foibles.

Delightful and funny

How does Haven remember the details of he little girl
Antics and little girl mind. I love love love how she brings us into her little mischievous girl mind and life. I read the book years ago and recommended it to many. I really enjoyed listening to it this time. I laughed out loud.

I highly recommend it. One of my favorite books of all time!

Very Entertaining

The author is around the same age as I am. Her memories took me back to childhood. Her father was a lot like my dad and her mom similar to mine. I laughed and smiled the whole way through.

Definitely a fun read, great story

Enjoy the author's humor. It was real read but it did not have any reality that took the story dark. A story with a good outlook on life.

Excellent book -- double covered!

This book is a must-"read" for anyone born before 1965. I found, however, that the book was presented in 2-parts, but both parts were exactly the same ... ? Excellent, none-the-less!

One of my favorites

I love memoirs and this one is just about perfect. Read by the author, she tells of her growing up in small town Indiana. It might sound boring but it's really not. She tells so many humorous stories throughout, I have listened to this too many times to count. Very good book, written and narrated perfectly.

A fun read

I didn't think I would enjoy this as much as I did. I found myself riding along with a big smile on my face. Funny, poignant, and very engaging!
