Publisher's summary

In a profound, funny, and beautifully rendered portrait of a beloved companion, best-selling novelist Dean Koontz remembers the golden retriever who changed his life. A retired service dog, Trixie was three when Dean and his wife, Gerda, welcomed her into their home. She was superbly trained, but her greatest gifts couldn’t be taught: her keen intelligence, her innate joy, and an uncanny knack for living in the moment. Whether chasing a tennis ball or protecting those she loved, Trixie gave all she had to everything she did, inspiring Dean and Gerda to trust their instincts and recapture a sense of wonder that will remain with them always. Trixie lived fewer than 12 years; in this wide world, she was a little thing. But in every way that mattered, she lived a big life.

Great dog book

Having read many dog books, this stands out as one of the best. Not only does this great author tell the tale of his beloved dog's life, but he's able to weave philosophical/spiritual threads into his narrative. So, beautifully done.

My only criticism, and it's a minor one for this book, is the author-as-narrator dilemma. Koontz is a competent narrator, but, he's not a pro. So... I think it would've been a tad better production had a professional narrator read this book.

I've been recommending it to everyone I know. It's really must reading for any dog love, to be sure.

Both funny and touching

I have listen to a lot of Dean Koontz story's and have always found them spell binding. This book is very different from the others yet no less Interesting. I have had had a few dogs in my life and the connection to the animals are more than the sum of the parts. I think Dean paints this relationship in a funny as well as poignant way. Trixie sounded like a lovable dog that deserved nothing but the best. It was fortunate that Dean had the money to take care that was so well deserved.

Wonderful

This book really shares the love between a person and their dog. The end is heartbreaking, but any dog parent knows what is coming.
