Publisher's summary

In 1861, when war erupted between the states, President Lincoln made an impassioned plea for volunteers. Determined not to remain on the sidelines, Emma Edmonds cropped her hair, donned men's clothing, and enlisted in the Union Army. Everyone, even her fellow soldiers, thought she was a man.

But Emma wanted to do more. When she heard a key Union spy had been captured and executed, she volunteered to take his place. Soon she was a cunning master of disguise, risking discovery and death at every turn. Emma had fooled her own army, but could she keep her secret behind rebel lines?

Inspiring and Entertaining

The narrator of this book was very entertaining. At times there would be singing and you could really feel like you understood Emma Edmonds life. I couldn't stop with me to it and heard the whole book straight through. I wish that somebody would make this into a movie.

Interesting and Inspiring

The story of all that this woman accomplished, at a time when women were thought of as little more than child bearers and house keepers, is simply incredible. It's a great lesson as to what can be accomplished when one sets themself to task despite what the naysayers think

Excellent informative reading about the Civil War

We absolutely loved this story of Emma Edmonds. My 8th graders read this as part of their war unit and found if fascinating to get a glimpse of Civil War Spies. Highly recommend this easy read.

From a Female Civil War Soldier Reenactor

This book is absolutely incredible. I was brought to tears at the end. Emma was such an amazing person and her life made a wonderful story. I am a female Civl War Reenactor who represent the 500-1000 women who cross dressed and fought in the American Civil War, Emma being one of those. This story was obviously impactful to me but if you have any interest at all in the ACW, you will want to read this book. Especially if you have an interest in the medical side of Civil War history or espionage during the Civil War. Travia Gilber was absolutely amazing and is an amazing voice actor! All of the characters were perfectly played and she was very easy to understand! Highly recommend, 10/10!

A Perfect Story For Social Studies Classes Today

This incredible story is a great perspective of the Civil War. It encompasses aspects of life from all parties that were involved. What I found interesting and unusual for this day and age was not only the nod to feminist but spoke of the treatment of slaves as well as the gallantry of all soldiers and achievement of both Northern and Southern generals tactics. The story also shows the humanity, plight, conflict,, and bravery of the people who lived through this era in history.

Most incredible story.

We listened to this book with our three sons to compliment our curriculum. We had just finished the gold rush era which swung the states into the civil unrest once CA had a large enough population to become a state and entering the Union as a free state upset the equal balance of the bitter debate the states had been having on slavery. This audiobook was captivating. Wow. The narrator's performance was amazing. The "character" Cuff truly is our favorite disguise Emma used on her spy trips to the South and the Irish bonny disguise was also so well played by the narrator. Only one word was upsetting but I didn’t react and none of my boys noticed who are (5, 7 and 9 years old). It is a beautiful book. It is exciting, and filled with beautiful faith rooted in the truth that good shall prevail. I just adore Emma and think she is a brave, incredible patriot who did such good during a horribly difficult and painful time in our country. I cannot wait to share the story with our daughter once she is old enough. I love that Emma’s story ends the way it should. With honor and respect for all her service and sacrifice. I am thinking this one will be added to our permanent library, listen to it you won’t regret it.
