Publisher's summary

"Beasts, Men and Gods" (1922) is a historical memoir by Ferdinand Ossendowski.

Excerpt from the Introduction:
Dr. Albert Shaw of the "Review of Reviews", after reading the manuscript, characterized the author as "The Robinson Crusoe of the Twentieth Century". I desire, therefore, to assure the reader at the outset that Dr. Ossendowski is a man of long and diverse experience as a scientist and writer with a training for careful observation which should put the stamp of accuracy and reliability on his chronicle. Only the extraordinary events of these extraordinary times could have thrown one with so many talents back into the surroundings of the "Cave Man" and thus given to us this unusual account of personal adventure, of great human mysteries and of the political and religious motives which are energizing the "Heart of Asia." - LEWIS STANTON PALEN

Artist Bio Author:
Ferdinand Ossendowski (1876-1945) was a Polish writer, explorer, professor, and anti-Communist political activist, known for his books about Lenin and the Russian Civil War in which he participated.

A Treck accross Asia

Fascinating details of an eastward escape from the Revolutionary Russia accross Siberia, Mongolia and China with vivid descriptions of places and men of political, military, and spiritual significance.

Great Book Spoiled by Bad Production

Firstly, the writing itself is great and I really enjoyed the content of the book. However the audio production is horrible. No attention was paid to audio quality and it clearly was not listened to before publishing. There is frequently distortion and a kind of ringing that can be heard in multiple chapters; But also you can hear watch alarms going off, dogs barking and doors being opened and closed. While the quality of the equipment is nice and recording itself is high quality in terms of sampling and bit-rate, the actual output is very hard to listen to which is pretty disappointing. The narrator is good for the most part, his voice is pleasant to listen to and does a good job with the material. However the other issues make the book not worth getting. Either wait for another recording or just read it yourself.

Long and winding road

I am trying to discern the point of this book. It appears to be a long and detailed account of a stranger in a strange land. The frequent changes in plot, character, and setting make it difficult to follow or put anything in context. Just one long series of interactions with an array of unusual characters.
