First Jane Harper novel that was just OK

Even though she works in the mystery genre, Harper writes genuine literary fiction and takes time between books. (Real writers don't put out at least three books per year, à la hacks like Freida McFadden.) 'Last One Out' is by no means bad—it's still worth a read—but not up to the very high standard set by her previous work.

Jane Harper is in my top 3 author list. Her writing is effortless to read, characters are so real. She gets to the under layer of feelings,

Relentlessly sad

It’s a good story and I was surprised by it a few times. It is slowly paced which is not a bad thing. The main characters each behave with dignity and kindness which was a pleasant escape these days, even as it occurs within pervasive sadness,
