Nat Cassidy, author of the acclaimed horror Mary, returns with When the Wolf Comes Home, an unabashed, adrenaline-fueled pop horror thriller where the darkest fears can become reality.

“This is the kind of great, big, epic horror novel we got back in the '80s that came out swinging for the fences and left everything on the field. Welcome back, you shaggy, bloody monster of a book!”—Grady Hendrix

Reseñas de la Crítica

"When The Wolf Comes Home is a sharp-edged metaphor for trauma and rage, for how they seep into us, how we carry them in us and how sometimes, we pass them on like a curse."—Cassandra Khaw, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Nothing But Blackened Teeth

When the Wolf Comes Home is an imaginative, adrenaline-fueled wild ride through the babysitting job from Hell. Brims with both horror and heart.”—Tananarive Due, author of The Reformatory

"I finished reading the book about a week ago, and it keeps sliding back into my thoughts and conversations. ... Wolf carries with it a harrowing inevitability. The feeling you get, maybe, when one enters the Twilight Zone, and you just know things will be different now. ... Nat Cassidy has tapped into something with this one: it's the mood all us readers are always digging for: the Truth, a truth, his truth... the sort of truth you add to your own.”—Josh Malerman, New York Times Best Selling author of Bird Box and Incidents Around the House

One of my favorites of all time

The horror aspects were great. Lots of twists. All together an awesome read. The reader did a good job as well.

When the Wolf Comes Home

This continuously reminded me of the Twilight Zone: The Movie segment - It’s a Good Life. I loved this book equally as much as I loved that segment allllll those years ago. The afterword wrapped the entire book up with a tidy little bow and elevated the experience. I will listen/read this again mother time, with the knowledge of how it came to be. Highly recommended.

A wildly imaginative, horrific, wonderful read

What an exquisite, unexpected journey of a novel. I thought I knew what I was in for, but I have never been so delighted and terrified to be dead wrong. It is astonishing how the author manages to rock us back and forth between intimate, all-too-human interactions and the unrelenting violence that explodes across the page. Wildly imaginative. Horrifying. Utterly heartbreaking.

As with all Nat Cassidy books, do not skip the forward and afterword - especially if you are listening to the outstanding audiobook version of this novel.

It’s rare for me to re-read books, but as with some of my favorite Stephen King novels over the years, I know that I will revisit this one again and again

OMG this story….I will always read whatever he writes.

Preface- I have now read everything Nat Cassidy has written and loved the short list enough that I plan on purchasing every book as soon as he releases it, no matter what the subject is.
Story- Absolutely fantastic. I will tell you it starts out pretty slow. The action happens pretty quickly, but it’s just action, it’s not particularly intriguing at first, but if you wait….just wait….the premise is amazing and Nat really digs into it and explores it. There is a part, I won’t say which one, but it was sooooo hard hitting that I wanted to cry, gasp in horror and scream on behalf of the character involved, but none of them felt like they would be enough of an expression. Also, I love Nat’s forwards and afterwards. The story is exactly what you expect on the lowest level, but so much more than you would ever hope for on a more fundamental level and it really makes you think.
Narration- The narration was SPOT on. She did such an amazing job with the different voices and with the story itself. There were many emotional moments for the characters that she really leaned into and hit those notes perfectly.

Favorite listen of 2025

This story was impossible to stop listening to! The narrator is incredible and the story itself was so fantastical! This has been my favorite book by Nat Cassidy, and that is saying something because his books are amazing!

So much action that I forgot about the horror part!

I can’t write anything without going through details and the risk of sharing too much! This is personally one of the best book so far! Even better than M and N (too high to write the whole thing and here I am writing more than the whole thing! Go figure!). Amazing book! Also, the author note at the end a must listen! Merveilleux !

Fear Itself

This was excellent. It feels like one of those books that has Big Ideas, but you think about them more after the fact, because in the present story, you are too busy surviving the chase.

I love the way that Nat's books always end up in a story that is different- and deeper- than what you expected going in. This is not done by cheap twists or trickery. it is not bait-and-switch. It feels like an escalation: The character you are following themselves think they are in one kind of (dangerous) story, and just when they have a sense of what is happening and how they might survive it, things build to what is actually going on. And it is done in a fair play way: We have been given all the clues. We just thought we were in one kind of book, (e.g. a 'werewolf story') and we are, but it is also something richer than that, too. I really tore right through listening to this- the whole book moves at the speed of a chase, but without sparing on character and nuance along the way.

And really excellent work by narrator Helen Laser- there are some big emotional moments to tell, and Laser is able to do that thing where a narrator performs moments of that size with emotional truth, while at the same time not losing the scope that this is still an audiobook not a stage play. I bet that is not easy to balance, and Laser does.

One last, non-spoiler specific: The sequence of balancing a sensitive child's anxieties and triggers up against all the startles of the modern world (like a department store at Halloween) rings true. There are other circumstances that turn that very familiar challenge into something more supernatural and dangerous, but I love the way the idea is grounded in that lived experience. There is a lot in this book about not just fear but about lifelong anxiety, which I think it told with integrity and insight.

It's great. Looking forward to Nat's next one!
