Editorial reviews

The first novel in the New Species series from best-selling erotic romance author Laurann Dohner is by turns suspense-filled, brutal, and steamy.

Ali Ahn, known to New York stage audiences and for her cameo work in television crime dramas, brings an urgency and tension to the story of nurse Ellie Brower. The pharmaceutical company employee discovers to her horror that the company is experimenting with the DNA of what have become animal-humans. That shock is replaced by infatuation with Specimen 416, which brings on first his hatred and then a mutual lust that becomes as much a part of their lives as an ongoing struggle to survive.

Publisher's summary

Ellie is horrified to discover the pharmaceutical company she works for is doing illegal experiments. Company scientists have spliced human and animal DNA, creating exotic new species. One such "experiment" captures her heart and she’ll do anything to save him - even if he hates her for it.

Fury has never known compassion or love. He's spent his life in a cell, chained and abused by humans. The one woman he allowed himself to trust betrayed him. Now he’s free and set on vengeance. He vows to end her life but when she's finally in his grasp, harming her is the last thing he wants to do to the sexy little human.

Fury can't resist Ellie - the touch of her hands, her mouth on his skin, her body wrapped around his. He's obsessed with the scent of his woman. And Ellie wants Fury - always has. She craves his big, powerful body and wants to heal his desolate heart.

But loving Fury is one thing... taming him is another.

Reader Advisory: This story contains the heartrending aftermath of a rape scene involving a captive male. Another scene involves capture and forced touching by a hurt, vengeful Fury.

Please unleash Fury upon me !!

Any additional comments?

I actually started reading Laurann Dohner "Species" series as I loved Lora Leigh's "Breeds" novels and this series is quite like them. This book has all your needs catered for in a good Shifter novel. Loads of Hot and Horny sex to got round for all ears to enjoy. plus a great story line. I loved it and Ali Ahn's narration was awesome !!

Fury and Ellie have a rough start to say the least. Elle is working at the pharmaceutical company when she discovers the scientists there have taken human and animal DNA, creating exotic new species. One of those new species happens to be Fury. Once she learns what's going on she goes undercover to try and save them, even doing some unthinkable things to Fury to not get caught,,,,,,,,,,

Steamy New Series

I love Lora Leigh's Breed Series, and since this one sounded similar, I thought I'd give it a try. I'll be honest. This book is so much like LL's Breed series, I'm a bit shocked the author got away with it without someone shouting "plagiarism". For fans of LL, the only difference that I can find is that the "New Species" were created for drug experimentation, while LL's Breeds were created as weapons. Otherwise, the setting, background story and plot development tools are strikingly similar.

Having said that, I still enjoyed this book. The premise is one I enjoy, and you gotta love these alpha males.

The sex is frequent and explicit, so if that's not your cuppa tea, beware. The emotional part of the story was done very well. The plot moved along well, and even though some of the "conflict" seemed a bit contrived, all in all, it flowed smoothly. There was enough action to keep you listening, then periods that focused on the couple's relationship and allowed my nerves to settle down.

The narrator wasn't all that great. She had a pleasant enough voice, but she did have some pacing and pronunciation issues that were a bit distracting.

If you're a paranormal/erotica/romance lover, I reckon you'll like this book. I certainly plan to read more books by this author, and more in this series.

Fascinating concept!

This review is written as I begin book four of the series. I've been deliberating on what to say about this story. Considering the fact that I have continued reading in the series, I obviously find something intriguing, but there are definitely some problems.

Lets's start with the positive. The concept of the story is fantastic! No spoilers here because everything in this review is revealed quickly in the book.
A drug company tests the effects of animal genes on humans. Initially the tests are innocuous and approved by and even partially funded by the US government. Of course, greed kicks in and unapproved, secret experiments create a "New Species" of humans who face cruel treatment and inhumane experimentation. Authortities discover and raid the secret testing locations, freeing the victims of these experiments. Now the New Species have to find a way to survive in a bigoted world as dangerous as the one from which they are delivered. That's where the series really picks up. Told you, great concept right? And now...as I see them are the problems.

Problem number one..the narrator. Its easy to be a critic, but be assured, I am listening in spite of the narration. A little editing would improve things greatly. (ie"The hall was lit with 'scones'". Sconces maybe?)

Problem 2: OK, this is the world of romance novels. The men are expected to be alpha to a degree most of us wouldn't like in real life; but so far the women are capable, self-sufficent women; until... Until they meet their New Species male. Then they become annoyingly submissive.

Problem 3: The too frequent sex scenes interrupt the flow of the story. Yeah, yeah, these guys have animal instincts and drives..we understand, but get on with the story already. Quantity, Ms. Dohner, does not equal quality. Also, there's an offensive quality to the initial intimate encounters between the male and female characters. "No means no" becomes more like "you're only saying 'no' because I haven't overcome you with my manliness" which of course he does. Not a good message for young women.

Problem 4: Maybe this isn't a problem for everyone. The author very skillfully drags you from the last page of each book to the beginning of the next. Notice I said "last page" of the book instead of "end". The books don't have tidy endings. If that bothers you..beware.

An intiguing storyline is hard to find, and this series has that. That's why I recommend this series in spite of these misgivings.

Let's see where it goes

Interesting concept...a lot to learn being the first in a series. One questionable scene nearly had me backing out, but glad I hung in for the whole show. Lets' see where it goes

I don't know if I care for the voices of the male Species characters

This story really grips you in audible.

This story really grips you in audible.
Having read this book numerous times, the plight of the New Species really does come across more and I found myself picking up even more details listening to the audible version. What happens feels more real and graphic in audible.
Good narration but I am not always a fan of the way the other voices come across. This is not the way I imagine them sounding. Especially Brawn, he sounded too girly for my taste knowing what a big, gruff guy he is from his book description.
BOOK REVIEW
My review is no longer a verified one as I have the older published version of this book.
WOW. The world that Ms Dohner has created is just wonderful.
Starts with a hell of a scene and keeps you glued till the end and just draws you in and makes you laugh as well as making you cry at the injustice that humanity can accomplish.
The way these New Species appreciate every little thing around them after being raised in cells, labs and the abuse they have suffered, just makes me want to hug them all.
This story grips you from the first word and the situation Ellie finds herself in is phenomenally unbelievable. I hope I would be Ellie in this situation.
Fury's feelings are understandable but Ellie's compassion is exemplary. Fury's confusion about what he is feeling for Ellie is so well written you feel what he is feeling.
Fantastic first book and a wonderful read that has had me hooked on this series since the beginning.
I have reread these books numerous times and still love them completely each and every time I read one.
I have reviewed them previously but there has been a problem with reviews disappearing. I understand how important reviews are for authors and as it is no hardship to read them once again, I am writing reviews as I work through the series.

To be loved by a NS male is to know what love is!

I Love the series! This book is one of my favorites because Fury truly knows how to love. My favorite part is when Fury realizes he would rather love than hate and gives in to it for a chance at true happiness.
