"Our biggest fear," says poet and Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, "is that we will become nothing when we die. If we think that we cease to exist when we die, we have not looked very deeply at ourselves."

It is possible to live every day without being afraid of what happens when we die. Through a close examination of who we are, how we exist, and how we live, we can conquer our fear to live a freer and happier life. Through stories and lucid teachings, Thich Naht Hanh brings peace of mind to a difficult subject, and shows is how to live a happier life, free of fear.

I was surprised how simple and “real” the prose were to me. Buddhist chants like the Heart Sutra or other teachings can seem a bit like woo, or something esoteric and just outside my mind's reach, but not this book. It’s down-to-earth (literally) and the last chapter made me cry. The whole book was very relatable.

I am fairly new to meditation and Buddhist teachings. I found this book to be full of useful, accessible metaphors to begin understanding the teachings. I also found the tone to be full of kindness and compassion. I look forward to listening to it again.

Thich Nhat Hanh has explained, through plain language and examples, some of the deeper teaching of Buddhism that have confused me prior to this reading. With this help, my understanding has deepened and I believe this will inform my practice to deepen also. "When conditions are sufficient, we manifest, when conditions are not sufficient, we go into hiding." I am not this body. No death, no fear, only continuation.

Emptiness and No Self

So much great advice. I love this book. I’m in hospice and this book helps with facing death.

Greatest book I’ve read this year

Another clear communication about Buddhism and how our minds are busy but often miss the big picture which often requires quietness of the mind. One of his books is enough to get you 99% to Zen. This one is as good as others, like “Happiness”.

Eckart Tolle jokes that his talks are about One Thing; T.N.Hahn is similar, but still writes a book every 2 years

This is a most beautiful book by Thich Nhat Hanh, as so many of his books.
I have the written version and listening/reading is a must.
The book is valuable for quick reference.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
The narrator, mr, Ken McLeod is a pleasure to listen to.
My thanks to all involved, JK
