If you live for people's acceptance, you'll die from their rejection.
Two-time Grammy-winning rap artist, Lecrae, learned this lesson through more than his share of adversity - childhood abuse, drugs and alcoholism, a stint in rehab, an abortion, and an unsuccessful suicide attempt. Along the way, Lecrae attained an unwavering faith in Jesus and began looking to God for affirmation.
Now as a chart-topping industry anomaly, he has learned to ignore the haters and make peace with his craft. The rap artist holds nothing back as he divulges the most sensitive details of his life, answers his critics, shares intimate handwritten journal entries, and powerfully models how to be Christian in a secular age.
This is the story of one man's journey to faith and freedom.

Lecrae tells his story honestly, but doesn't glamorize his pre-Christian life. Walks through tough issues of drugs, sex, and abortion.
For Jesus glory.
Lecrae expressed his emotions very well while reading.
How often Lecrae was in trouble with the law (cops, etc)
When Lecrae was confronted/called by God and fell to his knees under the preaching of James White (not of AOmin, which is one of my favorite theologians, but of Christ Our King Comm. Chuch). In short, God chose to save Lecrae, that is amazing.
Jesus is a perfect Savior because God's grace is sufficient.
Lecrae is an amazing and I have more respect for him than I've ever had. I will continue to pray for him, his family and his work. I got a better explanation of why he makes the music he makes, and I know why we differ. He and I view walking in holiness a little differently. He explains holiness (the secular/sacred divide) in the last chapter. I'm familiar with his theology, being Reformed myself, so him acknowledging God's sovereign choice to do certain things in his life was refreshing.
Loved this book. Hesitated to purchase it at first. My son loves his music, I not so much. Love the words.... I think it was a bonus having him read his own words. His passion was detected. I think everyone should read this book.
I love to read and even better with my ears because I can listen twice as fast as I read.
I purchased this book after my (soon to be wife) sent me a link for an advance purchase from Life Way and I ordered the printed copy shortly there after. Weeks passed and the book remained on my bedroom floor where I had placed after it arrived. I love reading, but I struggle with comprehension when trying to read fast and at my normal pace it would take weeks to finish. Being short on time to read, but having a genuine desire to hear Lecrae's story, I purchased the audio version at full price before a run. In less than day I completed the book for the first time. God has an interesting sense of humor, although I struggle with reading text, I can listen to audio at 2X (twice the normal speed), thus allowing me to consume audio books in about half the projected time. This book has touched me in ways that leave me searching for words to explain. His words speak, transparency, hurt, healing, love, struggle, longing, loneliness, and desire to accepted for who he is. I have long been a fan of the music, but after hearing this brother's story I can say I love the man behind the music and pledge here and now to pray for him. I think the book touched and moved me in part because of the parallels in our lives. This is one of those books I can easily recommend to vastly diverse group of people. There are many who have overcome that don't have the platform to tell their story, but I thank God that He allowed Lecrae to share his and that he remains unashamed. Romans 1:16

Yes. I think the book was well written beginning with the introduction, the explanation of him falling in Love of Hip & Hop, summers with his grandmother in San Diego, trying to commit suicide, coming to Christ, developing a world view of Christ. This young man had quite a journey and I enjoyed learning everything about his career path.
There were sooo many great parts to Lecrae's life story. He explains his childhood with such vividness whether it was in Colorado, San Diego California (with his grandma) or Texas as an adolescent; the forms of abuse he suffered, the suicide attempts, etc. But after reading the book in its entirety and re-visiting the introduction portion, I really enjoyed that part tremendously. Because you learn about everything this man has been through and at the pinnacle of his musical success to be nominated for a Grammy in a league of Drake, Eminem, and Kendrick Lamar, he stills does not receive complete acceptance. And at the end of the chapter he ends it by saying, "...part of being human and especially being Christian means not fitting in and the only solution is learning to look for God for ultimate recognition. ....If you live for people's acceptance, you'll die from their rejection."
Kind of, I definitely "wanted" to just sit and listen to the book in its entirety. However, I came across certain parts where I just wanted to sit back and reflect on what I just heard.
For any person who has just accepted Christ or salvation, this is an excellent read. His life's story is an excellent example that the path of salvation is not perfect and it doesn't have to be.
A story brilliantly told by Lecrae. Good insight into the reason why he does what he does.
"Powerful, Inspiring, Honest"
Excellent autobiography written and read by a thoughtful man whose struggles many will identify with.
Audio version gives the advantage of being able to hear Lecrae rap the lyrics at the beginning of each chapter. It's also great to discover the context for some of Lecrae's albums. I look forward to listening to them again with new ears.
I hope Lecrae's story inspires people to discover God's call for their lives and gives them the courage to pursue it.
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to his story!
At times i wanted a bit more depth about how he overcame specific struggles, but he was so honest and bold with everything. Great listen!
Capitalising story with a great message behind it. Really opened up a lot a wisdom and knowledge about The Word and the world . Thank you Lecrae.
"Genuine, Honest, from the heart, challenging"
A massive blessing listening to this with his struggle and passion for God and the idea of being in this world not just separate a massive challenge! definitely highly recommend!!!
