Publisher's summary

This touching and hilarious memoir is 100 percent Carol Burnett—funny, irreverent, and irresistible.Carol Burnett is one of the most beloved and revered actresses and performers in America. The Carol Burnett Show was seen each week by millions of adoring fans and won twenty-five Emmys in its remarkable eleven-year run.

Now, in This Time Together, Carol really lets her hair down and tells one funny or touching or memorable story after another. In engaging anecdotes, Carol discusses her remarkable friendships with stars such as Jimmy Stewart, Lucille Ball, Cary Grant, and Julie Andrews; the background behind famous scenes, like the moment she swept down the stairs in her curtain-rod dress in the legendary “Went with the Wind” skit; and things that would happen only to Carol—the prank with Julie Andrews that went wrong in front of the First Lady; the famous Tarzan Yell that saved her during a mugging; and the time she faked a wooden leg to get served in a famous ice cream emporium. This poignant look back allows us to cry with the actress during her sorrows, rejoice in her successes, and finally, always, to laugh.

Critic reviews

"These short memories, of the people Burnett met and interviewed over the years, on- and off-camera, bring it back — the golden age of variety shows....Burnett has a writer's eye for the moment, the detail, the slip that reveals character. She's never mean and always grateful."—Los Angeles Times

"Carol was a huge star on television because she was funny, daring, and always genuine. We loved Carol because we felt we knew her. With this book, we do. She trusts us with her personal anecdotes, happy, sad, hilarious and poignant. Thank you Carol. "—Billy Crystal

"I read This Time Together in one sitting and when I finished I felt like Carol had been sitting beside me telling me these wonderful stories of her life. It's funny, it's endearing and very moving. I cannot recommend it highly enough."—Julie Andrews

Classy Lady

What a great way to tell some of the stories of her life! No one else could have narrated her stories with the passion that Carol did. I wish it was easier to find her shows on TV. It's good, clean fun you could even watch with children or grandchildren

Simply fantastic!

A fantastic book narrated by the author herself! I laughed, I cried and was mesmerized by the entire story. Mrs Burnett made every word come to life, and I felt I was there with her!

I'm listening to it again!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I know my friends would love to hear Carol Burnett recount her own funny stories.

What did you like best about this story?

How she persevered in her own life and made it to Broadway, and then turned around and helped others to become a star.

Which scene was your favorite?

When Carol was refused a seat at a posh restaurant because she had on slacks. She told the mater-d that she had a wooden leg!

Any additional comments?

It's so fun to hear Carol's voice! You know she has a funny story just by the tone of her voice, and that little lilt at the end of her sentence.

Love Carol Burnett!

Would you consider the audio edition of This Time Together to be better than the print version?

I have never read the print version so I don't know.

What other book might you compare This Time Together to and why?

I listened to Happy Accidents by Jane Lynch just after Burnett's audiobook and they were similar in that they were sharing some personal stories from their life (happy and sad), although Jane's was more comprehensive as Carol's often had vignettes spliced in from moments of her life but not necessarily a full autobiography per se. It covered a lot though and was very interesting.

Which character – as performed by Carol Burnett – was your favorite?

It's an audiobook so there weren't really many characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I laughed at some of her stories and cried at others. I guess the saddest part was when she described the death of her daughter. So so sad.

Any additional comments?

If you love Carol Burnett, then definitely this is the book for you. If you don't know who Burnett is then it wouldn't be very interesting. I love her and loved her variety show when I was little. It was fun hearing the backstory for her life.

Interesting, Funny and Heartwarming

I enjoyed listening to Carol Burnet talking about her life, and success in her career as well as her personal life and family life. It was entertaining and made me laugh out loud at times and even brought tears to my eyes hearing about difficult times in Carol's life. If you are a Carol Burnett fan, this book is for you.
