Publisher's summary

This touching and hilarious memoir is 100 percent Carol Burnett—funny, irreverent, and irresistible.Carol Burnett is one of the most beloved and revered actresses and performers in America. The Carol Burnett Show was seen each week by millions of adoring fans and won twenty-five Emmys in its remarkable eleven-year run.

Now, in This Time Together, Carol really lets her hair down and tells one funny or touching or memorable story after another. In engaging anecdotes, Carol discusses her remarkable friendships with stars such as Jimmy Stewart, Lucille Ball, Cary Grant, and Julie Andrews; the background behind famous scenes, like the moment she swept down the stairs in her curtain-rod dress in the legendary “Went with the Wind” skit; and things that would happen only to Carol—the prank with Julie Andrews that went wrong in front of the First Lady; the famous Tarzan Yell that saved her during a mugging; and the time she faked a wooden leg to get served in a famous ice cream emporium. This poignant look back allows us to cry with the actress during her sorrows, rejoice in her successes, and finally, always, to laugh.

Critic reviews

"These short memories, of the people Burnett met and interviewed over the years, on- and off-camera, bring it back — the golden age of variety shows....Burnett has a writer's eye for the moment, the detail, the slip that reveals character. She's never mean and always grateful."—Los Angeles Times

"Carol was a huge star on television because she was funny, daring, and always genuine. We loved Carol because we felt we knew her. With this book, we do. She trusts us with her personal anecdotes, happy, sad, hilarious and poignant. Thank you Carol. "—Billy Crystal

"I read This Time Together in one sitting and when I finished I felt like Carol had been sitting beside me telling me these wonderful stories of her life. It's funny, it's endearing and very moving. I cannot recommend it highly enough."—Julie Andrews

Love Carol Burnett & Want Her Other Books!

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this lovely lady. There are so many good books out there, that it is hard to find the time to re-read anything. This one is so good and short enough, that I am sure I will return to it often. I only wish other books by her and read by her were on Audible!

Funny Stories, Embarrassing Moment and Heartbreak

When listening to this autobiography of Carol Burnett’s life I realized a lot of these dates were a long, long time ago. I looked up when the Carol Burnett show actually aired. It was on tv from 1967-1978. So I don’t know if I actual know anyone who saw it when it first aired. I can tell you even watching it via streaming now, it makes me laugh and now my son too.

Each chapter is a different story from Carol’s past. She is honest and isn’t afraid to share how she did some stupid things and how she was star struck. She even covers the death of her daughter in one of the chapters which was surprising to me that she would share her pain like that.

One of the stories covers how she met Cary Grant and completely embarrassed herself. When she heard he was coming to her friend’s party, she told her husband, Joe, that they needed to leave. He laughed and talked her into staying. He was a big fan of her show and he asked her some questions. For a while, she just stared at him and then gave a nonsense answer. On the way home, her husband told her, he would never doubt her again. Luckily, Cary gave her another chance and they became friends.

Some of the chapters cover skits and how they happened or how Tim would do one take according to lines and then the next take would all be ad-lib.

If you need a light story that will make you laugh, I would definitely recommend.

Get ready to smile for 5 1/2 hours!

If you loved the Carol Burnett Show, you will love this book. Carol, no surprise, does a terrific narration, sharing some laugh out loud moments and very interesting stories of how she began in the business. One of my favorite stories involved Tim Conway and a sheep. I will say no more. Plus, hearing the inside scoop on the famous "Gone With The Wind" knock-off scene was such fun!
