Publisher's summary

This touching and hilarious memoir is 100 percent Carol Burnett—funny, irreverent, and irresistible.Carol Burnett is one of the most beloved and revered actresses and performers in America. The Carol Burnett Show was seen each week by millions of adoring fans and won twenty-five Emmys in its remarkable eleven-year run.

Now, in This Time Together, Carol really lets her hair down and tells one funny or touching or memorable story after another. In engaging anecdotes, Carol discusses her remarkable friendships with stars such as Jimmy Stewart, Lucille Ball, Cary Grant, and Julie Andrews; the background behind famous scenes, like the moment she swept down the stairs in her curtain-rod dress in the legendary “Went with the Wind” skit; and things that would happen only to Carol—the prank with Julie Andrews that went wrong in front of the First Lady; the famous Tarzan Yell that saved her during a mugging; and the time she faked a wooden leg to get served in a famous ice cream emporium. This poignant look back allows us to cry with the actress during her sorrows, rejoice in her successes, and finally, always, to laugh.

Critic reviews

"These short memories, of the people Burnett met and interviewed over the years, on- and off-camera, bring it back — the golden age of variety shows....Burnett has a writer's eye for the moment, the detail, the slip that reveals character. She's never mean and always grateful."—Los Angeles Times

"Carol was a huge star on television because she was funny, daring, and always genuine. We loved Carol because we felt we knew her. With this book, we do. She trusts us with her personal anecdotes, happy, sad, hilarious and poignant. Thank you Carol. "—Billy Crystal

"I read This Time Together in one sitting and when I finished I felt like Carol had been sitting beside me telling me these wonderful stories of her life. It's funny, it's endearing and very moving. I cannot recommend it highly enough."—Julie Andrews

Like listening to an old friend

I really enjoyed this. Having grown up watching the "Carol Burnett Show" it was great to hear some of the behind the scene stories as well as some of her family life. I had read Carol's first autobiography "One More Time" years ago when it first came out and I loved it. "This Time Together" is not exactly a memoir. It's more like sitting around the kitchen table with an old family friend listening as they tell stories of their life; some are hilarious, some are scary, some tragic. Of course this was made all the better because Carol herself did the narration. Not only do we get to hear the Tarzan yell, but we also get the story behind it! Highly recommended.

A Great Listen

Carol Burnett shares some of her wonderful memories with us and we are honored to be included. Some are funny, some are inspirational and some are very sad, but they all speak to her as a person, as well as an entertainer. This book only reinforced my prior conviction that this is a person I would love to know.

Excellent!

I grew up watching the Carol Burnett Show, so it was interesting to hear these stories. Carol is a natural story teller. Every story was well written, interesting and funny; with one or two that were a little sad. You can really get a sense for what a genuine and warm person Carol Burnett really is. I loved the stories about actors/entertainers helping each other. I would recommend this book to anyone. But the very best part of this audiobook is that you get to hear Carol tell her own stories in her own words. It's like sitting next to her. After hearing this entire book, I can say: this woman is my friend. (You have to hear the stories to know what that means).

I loved listening to Carol Burnett read this and felt like we were sitting in the same room sharing her Wonderful memories. I laughed remembering her Oh, so funny skits and cried as well. Also enjoyed her "meetings" with her idols as well, I believe this is one of several audio books I'll listen to over and over again. Thank you Ms. Burnett for sharing your life with your fans.

very pleasant and worth the read

I think this book was more enjoyable, due to the fact that Carol read it herself. It was a pleasant account of her life in the spotlight.

Here’s Carol!

Still charming and funny! Such a down to earth presentation. The oration welcomes you into her story and it warmed my heart. How ordinarily normal in a wonderful way. I teared up a couple of times and laughed right out loud many times.
I’m sure to listen again. It was so much fun I’m all set to listen to another of her books! I definitely recommend “This Time Together”.

A pearl made from NY muscle

One of my earliest memories growing up could be traced back as far as me being 3 years old. Musicals had a very large impact on my use because it was one of my grandmother's favorite genre's. During those early years my parents would take me to the movies and I remember seeing Peter Pan on Broadway when I was just a toddler. But what I can remember most is the funny voices that miss Hannigan would make during her inner changes with of obnoxious brats in Annie. On and on over the years my aunt to this day would still say to me we love you miss hannigan. Always reminding me how much I enjoyed watching that movie and singing to it constantly. Carol Burnett was my 1st inspiration to be a singer. Like how she mentions in her book on being brave and displaying it when needed I've made the connection that this woman's impression on my childhood had let me to display bravery in my own way whenever needed. Hearing her stories and the way she and her colleagues in the performing arts would strive and survive in the city that never sleeps was a reminder to me of all the years I have dedicated both to my craft and my life as well. When it comes down to that deciding time in Carol's life when luck, talent and timing aligned in a perfect eclipse was the time when she took that step of bravery and that leap of faith in herself to put on her own show. For anyone who wishes to become "successful" in TV movies theater art or whatever have you not it comes down to this : Be. be brave. be ready. because if you don't then you'll be fine. But why be fine when you are a light that can shine?
