Publisher's summary

This touching and hilarious memoir is 100 percent Carol Burnett—funny, irreverent, and irresistible.Carol Burnett is one of the most beloved and revered actresses and performers in America. The Carol Burnett Show was seen each week by millions of adoring fans and won twenty-five Emmys in its remarkable eleven-year run.

Now, in This Time Together, Carol really lets her hair down and tells one funny or touching or memorable story after another. In engaging anecdotes, Carol discusses her remarkable friendships with stars such as Jimmy Stewart, Lucille Ball, Cary Grant, and Julie Andrews; the background behind famous scenes, like the moment she swept down the stairs in her curtain-rod dress in the legendary “Went with the Wind” skit; and things that would happen only to Carol—the prank with Julie Andrews that went wrong in front of the First Lady; the famous Tarzan Yell that saved her during a mugging; and the time she faked a wooden leg to get served in a famous ice cream emporium. This poignant look back allows us to cry with the actress during her sorrows, rejoice in her successes, and finally, always, to laugh.

Critic reviews

"These short memories, of the people Burnett met and interviewed over the years, on- and off-camera, bring it back — the golden age of variety shows....Burnett has a writer's eye for the moment, the detail, the slip that reveals character. She's never mean and always grateful."—Los Angeles Times

"Carol was a huge star on television because she was funny, daring, and always genuine. We loved Carol because we felt we knew her. With this book, we do. She trusts us with her personal anecdotes, happy, sad, hilarious and poignant. Thank you Carol. "—Billy Crystal

"I read This Time Together in one sitting and when I finished I felt like Carol had been sitting beside me telling me these wonderful stories of her life. It's funny, it's endearing and very moving. I cannot recommend it highly enough."—Julie Andrews

A thoroughly good listen

What did you like best about this story?

I used to watch the Carol Burnett Show when I was a kid in the mid to late 1970's. Most shows don't age well, but when I see clips today, it is just as funny now as it was then. Hearing Carol Burnett tell stories about her life and what was going on in the background of her show is almost as funny as the show itself. I definitely recommend this to anyone that enjoys a laugh--whether or not they watched her show(s) when they aired. Oh, and I cried in places, too.

What about Carol Burnett’s performance did you like?

Delivered as only Carol Burnett could do. Thank you for giving us this extra time together!

Any additional comments?

Each story is short, so it's a good listen for even short commutes.

Get to know your wacky Aunt Carol!

Would you listen to This Time Together again? Why?

Yes, I would. This mini biography is narrated by Carol and I believe it gives the reader a good feel for who she is.

What other book might you compare This Time Together to and why?

I might compare it to Tina Fey's book if Tina didn't try so hard to make you laugh and force political views down your throat. Carol just lays it out there and the humor comes through naturally.

Which scene was your favorite?

I enjoyed all the aurhor's anecdotes but particularly when she met Jimmy Stewart and when she was caught by Ladybird Johnson pretending to smooch Julie Andrews.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed aloud several times. I really enjoyed when she discussed her wooden leg.

Any additional comments?

I would love to meet this woman and give her a great big hug. She and her cohorts have been a family staple my entire life. She and I are friends, we just haven't met yet.

It was a great time together.

I have always loved Carol Burnett and still love her after hearing her read her book. I loved the way she wrote and told every one of them. If you love Carol as much as I do, you'll love this.

Short but sweet

I had recently read Tim Conway's book and that was a bit underwhelming. Under funny actually. And it wasn't read by the author. But Ms. Burnett reads this and it's great. Funny but also illuminating of a life we otherwise see only from a distance. Fans of her will read this book no matter what I say here. Those, maybe significantly younger than I, could really like this book but I think I would recommend getting to know the performer a bit first. Youtube it.

Worth your time

It is told by Carol and you can hear her sadness, or laughter and love in her voice.Left nothing out. Funny story about her dog too. I was little when her show was on but loved the skits. She is very honest and it is a must to hear.

Good listen - funny!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It's like reading about the life of a friend. Carol is very down to earth and it shows through in the book. She's had good and bad in her life and she can still smile. Encouraging, to say the least.

What did you like best about this story?

I like that Carol is open and honest. Humour of course is part of the story as well.
