This Is an AudioBook | [Demetri Martin]

This Is an AudioBook

Demetri's first literary foray features longer-form essays and conceptual pieces (such as Protagonists' Hospital, a melodrama about the clinic doctors who treat only the flesh wounds and minor head scratches of Hollywood action heroes), as well as his trademark charts, doodles, drawings, one-liners, and lists (i.e., the world views of optimists, pessimists and contortionists), Martin's material is varied, but his unique voice and brilliant mind will keep listeners in stitches from beginning to end.

"This just doesn't work as an audio book..."
    Any additional comments?

This was really boring and awkward. I love Demetri Martin, but it's just not like his show/standup. It might have been better in text. His narration was drab and uninspired.

"Some books just can't be audiobooks"

I think Demitri Martin is an incredible comedian and his writing is funny in a very intelligent way. Some jokes, however, are better read than heard. This book is an example. While there are definitely some laugh-out-loud moments, I felt the majority of Martin's joke were jokes that simply put a big grin on your face. They're not really that funny, but they're certainly original.

Another thing to add is that there are some jokes in here that don't really make sense in an audiobook, but in a book would actually be quite funny. I say pick up the book version instead. This also makes it easier to go back to your favorite jokes and show them to your friends.

The "genie FAQs" was my favorite.

    "Loved it!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

    Absolutely! I already have.

What does Demetri Martin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The delivery in his voice emphasizes the humor.

    Any additional comments?

I wasn't sure about this as an audiobook, because his stand up involves a lot of visuals but this book was fantastic! Very witty and enjoyable, I will definitely listen to it again and again!

    "Weird and unfunny"

I'm generally a Demetri Martin fan but this audiobook was very weird and not funny. Everyone that was listening to it with me just looked around awkwardly and wished that it were over.
