"An enjoyable listen"
I found this to be an enjoyable listen which was nicely 'chunked'. I got through it very quickly though; quicker than I expected. It is a trifle patchy though. I would have liked to hear more on certain composers and more and clearer explanation of certain movements.
I found that this series takes a more historical approach and therefore would have been better titled the history of classical music.
If in-depth musical study is what you are after I would say that this is best avoided. On the other hand it does cover a very broad range of composers.
Although some very important people are barely touched upon.
Schubert Mahler and Shostakovich are good examples of people who are skimmed over in my opinion, that said; it may be unfair of me to expect other due to the way this series is presented.
I was undoubtedly naive to expect something swottier and more scholarly from BBC Radio 4 in this era in which we reside.
Probably a most enjoyable series if you are a Jim Naughtie fan, less great if you are less so.
