Publisher's Summary

At Cold Mountain Penitentiary, along the lonely stretch of cells known as the Green Mile, killers such as "Billy the Kid" Wharton and the possessed Eduard Delacroix await death strapped in "Old Sparky". Guards as decent as Paul Edgecombe and as sadistic as Percy Wetmore watch over them.

But good or evil, innocent or guilty, none has ever seen the brutal likes of the new prisoner, John Coffey, sentenced to death for raping and murdering two young girls. Is Coffey a devil in human form? Or is he a far, far different kind of being?

There are more wonders in heaven and hell than anyone at Cold Mountain can imagine. In The Green Mile, Stephen King builds the tension page by page and then delivers a revelation that will truly blow your mind.

"One of the best..do yourself a favour!"

Great story, great listen, beautifully read. This is a moving story that will transport you and transfix you. Stephen King is at his peak here, in non horror/pure storytelling mode, and I don't think there are any novelists who can better his ability to capture a scene, a moment, a sound or a feeling like he can. I've read the book, seen the movie and now listened to the book and enjoyed every moment of all of them.

"Great movie - but the book is even better"
Would you listen to The Green Mile again? Why?

For all those that have enjoyed the film more than once - this book is for you. Frank Muller is a perfect match for this wonderful book by Stephen King, and the book and more dimensions than the film.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Green Mile?

The ending in the book is much more powerful than the ending in the film (if you can believe that).

Have you listened to any of Frank Muller???s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is one of Frank Muller's finest performances. His voice is a perfect fit for this book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes - except that it is too long - and it was written in episodes, so reading it in one sitting is not how Stephen King meant it to be read (or listened to).

    Any additional comments?

This is Audible at its best.

    "Excellent story & superbly narrated"

Stephen King's books adapt really well to audio. I love the conversational style of his writing and unlike with a book, you have to go at the narrator's pace - no skipping ahead or skimming - and so you really get to appreciate the build up of tension and the twists and turns of the story. This is, in my view, one of King's best books, a genuinely excellent novel with a terrific story, great and very convincing atmosphere and a well drawn cast of three dimensional characters.

Frank Muller narrates the book brilliantly. He has a fantastic sense of pace and timing; distinguishes the characters superbly and he captures Stephen King's conversational style just right.

Strongly recommended - a real five star listen.

    "An incredible story, incredibly told."

The Green Mile is one of my all time favourite books. It's not easy to pin down to a genre - it's more an insight in to the highs and lows of human nature than a horror or paranormal fiction title. It?s six part, episodic structure only adds to its appeal, giving each part a tension and sense of expectation that makes reading or listening to the next part a must rather than an option. Despite the fact that, when you download the recording, you?re effectively getting all the episodes at once with no significant pause in between them, the way in which King links each part together somehow preserves this feeling, which only adds to the enjoyment. The feeling of needing to know what happens next is more or less constant throughout.

For me though, it?s Frank Muller?s incredible reading that makes this download really exceptional. Frank Muller and Stephen King are a incredibly potent mix ? Muller has an ability to absorb the minutia of each character and bring them to life with an ease that?s almost eerie, especially in first person, narrator driven stories like this, or the Shawshank Redemption. I understand that Muller won several awards for his performance in this recording ? listen to it for half an hour and I guarantee that you?ll see why. As King himself says '[When Frank reads], the blind will see, the lame will walk, and the deaf will hear.'

If you enjoy this reading, I highly recommend the Shawshank Redemption, The Talisman, and Black House (also on Audible) ? all of these are powerfully read Stephen King stories (the last two being co-written with Peter Straub) with Muller as narrator.

Muller is unfortunately now deceased, and was unable to make new recordings since 2001 following a motorbike accident ? somehow, that knowledge only makes this brilliant, haunting narrative all the more poignant. There will never be another like it. Treasure it.

    "Utterly, utterly magnificent"

How good was this audiobook? Well, I often work late and so drive home at night. This book made me sit out in my car after I had reached my home at 3:30am, because I just had to listen to the next bit. This was everything an audiobook should be. A fantastic piece of fiction, improved by being brilliantly interpreted. All of the characters leapt from my car stereo, and the whole thing transported me to a different place. Magical.

"The Best way to read this wonderful story"

The Green Mile is a story that is largely based in the real world but at its heart is a supernatural twist. The genious of King's writing is in his ability to get you to care so much about the characters and the story that you are more than willing to accept the supernatural element as if it were fact.

It's basically just good old fashioned story telling where you are hooked after chapter 1 and you just want to keep on listening. The story tugs at your emotions (almost yanking them off by the end of the book) but that is purely because you get emotionally involved in the situation, the characters and their plight.

It's also a story that examines human nature and what I loved especially is that the listener is left to determine the good and the bad in them, irrespective of their circumstances and history.

Frank Muller reads The Green Mile perfectly and I challenge anyone who has previously read the book to listen to this version and not agree that it is an improvement over your own "inner voice".

Simply put, 2 professionals at work make one fine piece of entertainment. I've listened to it 4 times now.

    "Definitely a five-star"

This is exceptional, combine the talent of Stephen King with the vocal reading of Frank Muller and you've got a winner. The story is strangely charming but has the intensity in places that Stephen King is famous for. I haven't seen the film but if it's half as good as the book I'm looking forward to tracking it down at the weekend.

    Story
"A book I'll remember for a very long time."
Where does The Green Mile rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Definitely one of my favourites... Soooooo much better than the film.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the idea of setting the story on death row, and similarly the time period appeals to me too. The characters are so well described, and you can't help but feel an affinity with some. The sense of 'waiting' is portrayed well throughout the book, but conversely there's always something going on.

Have you listened to any of Frank Muller’s other performances? How does this one compare?

This is my first Frank Muller listen - no complaints whatsoever.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed out loud on one occasion, and cried (sobbed!) at least twice! The fear of 'Old Sparky' is inherent throughout the narrative which makes the deaths even harder to listen to. I'll remember this book and it's characters for a very long time.

    Any additional comments?

Personally I could manage quite happily without the supernatural aspect of the book, and just have a tale of the time and the people who took a seat in the electric chair, however I thoroughly recommend this book.

Would you listen to The Green Mile again? Why?

The story is brilliantly written. Frank Muller's reading is, as usual, faultless. Captures the characters and the period in a completely convincing fashion

Who was your favorite character and why?

All the characters are strongly depicted

What does Frank Muller bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Able to convey a unique "feel" to the story. Very atmospheric.

    Any additional comments?

The combination of Stephen King and Frank Muller is perfect. Both masters of their respective trades.
