Publisher's summary

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder - and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family.

He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, truculent computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from 40 years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history.

But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

"I doubt you will read a better book this year." (Val McDermid)

"Intelligent, complex, with a gripping plot and deeply intriguing characters. The author's early death is a great loss." (Philip Pullman)

"What a cracking novel! I haven't read such a stunning thriller debut for years. Brilliantly written and totally gripping." (Minette Walters)

Fantastic Book

I loved this book! It started off slowly but the tension built slowly and steadily throughout. There were unsuspected plot twists and intrigue by the bucket-load. The Swedish names took a little getting used to but the narrator did a great job. I will be getting Steig Larsson's other books - I can't wait to read the next instalment.

Whatever the audiobook version of 'page turner'

Good book, really interesting characters and a somehow a nice change for the setting to be Skandinavian.
The character of Lisbet Salander is original and compelling.
A wee bit slow to start (1st hour or so) but well worth a little perseverance

Hooked on Stieg Larsson

I have just finished Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. What an unexpectedly delightful book, and what a relief there are two more books after this one. Lisbeth Salander is an unusual, but believable heroine. Saul Reichlin is a master narrator, and I will be searching for any other books he narrates.

Didn't expect to like this, but I loved it

Loved this book--lots to say about the sociopolitical situation in contemporary Sweden, as well as a strong love story (sort of!), as well as lots of scary stuff, and to top it all off strongly feminist female and male protagonists. I loved the detail--every sandwich eaten is described with the same care as the discussions of computer hacking. The only thing that didn't work for me was that despite an otherwise good reading, the Australian accent is HORRIBLE.

Great Listening

I really enjoyed this book; loved the narration and was sorry to have it end. I can hardly wait to read the next one and see what else the characters have in store for us.

Worth the time!

Admittedly, this book was a little hard to get into at first, and there's more inane detail than necessary at times.

Those things aside, this is a wonderfully entertaining read. The plot is far bigger and more complex than you could hope for, and the cast of characters is rich, diverse and contains some unlikely heroes.

I can't wait to get into the final chapter of the Millennium Trilogy.

great narrator,entertaining, intelligent and fun

i really enjoyed this series of books. having lived near sweden i could also appreciate the pronunciation and work by the narrator. it made it far more enjoyable. my dad found the books a bit wordy and long...sometimes dry, but i think it makes this audiobook that much richer. perhaps more interesting to listen to than to sit and read...

Email To My Uncle Trying to Convert Him to Audio

I just listened to the audio book. What an experience! You have got to start using your i Pod to listen to books.

Reading this book versus listening to it would probably be like drinking soy milk instead of partaking of the real stuff.

It gets even worse when you try to condense 18 hours into a couple of hours. A couple of times I thought the book was ending at a climatic part and was saying "Wow what a book" to myself only to find out there were several more hours to listen too. My reaction was - there is nothing the author could decently add to this story - only to find out a few hours later there definitely was.

I don't know how a movie can do justice to the book. The comparison has got to get worse.

A movie would be like listening to Beethoven's ninth on a toy accordion instead of with a symphony orchestra.
