Publisher's summary

Honest and heartbreaking, a mother's story of tears, joy, and her greatest love of all: her daughter, Whitney

On the eve of the 2012 Grammy Awards, the world learned of a stunning tragedy: Whitney Houston, unquestionably one of the most remarkable and powerful voices in all of music, had been silenced forever. Over the weeks and months that followed, family, friends, and fans alike tried to understand how such a magnificent talent and beautiful soul could have been taken so early and so unexpectedly. Glamorous and approachable, captivating and sweet, Whitney had long ago won the hearts of America, but in recent years her tumultuous personal life had grabbed as many headlines as her soaring vocal talents. Her sudden death left behind not only a legacy of brilliance, but also painful questions with no easy answers.

Now, for the first time, the beloved superstar's mother, Cissy Houston—a gospel legend in her own right—relates the full, astonishing scope of the pop icon's life and career. From Whitney's earliest days singing in the church choir to her rapid ascent to the pinnacles of music stardom, from her string of number-one hits to her topping the Hollywood box office, Cissy recounts her daughter's journey to becoming one of the most popular and successful artists of all time. Setting the record straight, Cissy also speaks candidly about Whitney's struggles in the limelight, revealing the truth about her turbulent marriage to singer Bobby Brown, her public attempts to regain her celebrated voice, and the battle with drugs that ultimately proved too much.

In this poignant and tender tribute to her "Nippy", Cissy summons all her strength to reveal not only Whitney the superstar, but also Whitney as a sweet girl, a bright-eyed young woman, and a deeply caring mother. Complete with never-before-seen family photographs, Remembering Whitney is an intimate, heartfelt portrait of one of our most revered artists, from the woman who cherished her most.

Great Stories About Spiritual & Fascinating People

Very well-written memoir. Doubt anyone could really hope to know anything of value about the entertainer Whitney Houston without understanding her roots. Her mother is obviously a force of nature. She carried a lot of people through good and bad times. She was the rock in the family and obviously, her family, friends, and co-workers depended on her performance in the world in every type of theater. I doubt from reading the book she ever really had someone she herself could lean on. She obviously never had any of the support systems she carefully constructed for her daughter. Her heartbreaks and losses are very real and human. She is the woman every woman wants and needs to have as a friend. Her abilities and purposes at evolution were supernatural. A competent swimmer in a "sink or swim" world. Always seeking higher standards in professionalism and life. Don't deny yourself the pleasure of reading this book and listening to her story. It is unique and not one you will forget you heard. I hope the red carpet always rolls out for her. I loved the narrator's voice and storytelling, Superb. If you lived in the entertainment business for any time period and lived on the East Coast, all the things that are not said in this book, are also easy to understand. You can hear it all between the lines that were never written.

A wonderful piece of work

This book is a touching memoir from a loving mother to her dear daughter. The book does well to send you back in time of a New Jersey home during hard times when a child is born with a golden voice that has touched millions. It explains the dynamics within the Houston household and how singing was simply part of their DNA.

Whitney Houston’s life reads like Shakespearean tragedy. I remember being so touched by her voice and even today when listening to the bodyguard soundtrack, her voice brings me chills. Whitney Houston struggled with drugs which is something that is not unique to her as it is an affliction that has impacted countless individuals all over the globe. This book does a good job of acknowledging Whitney’s flaws but it also highlights the tremendous good she done in this world.

Excellent Book!!! Worth the money and listen!

This book was emotional - highs and lows/laughs, smiles and tears! I marvel at Miss Cissy’s undying love, support and adoration of her daughter. Some people felt it was too much about her past but it was necessary and purposeful so you can understand both she and Whitney (Nippy). I listened to this twice!!! Loved it! Well done!

Heartbreaking Yet Inspirational

This book was an amazing account of the great Whitney Houston told by only the one person who knew her best - her mother. It of course was heartbreaking to hear of the struggles that Ms. Houston went through but at the same time, the book provided a great deal of inspiration and uplifting sentiments of faith. The bonus of this book was the narrator who, at times made me think it was actually Cissy Houston narrating the book herself! I know I will be listening to this book over and over.

Empathy for Ms Houston.

I purchased this book and read it when it first came out and it was a joy to listen to it the second time around. I have so much empathy for Ms. Houston and all the loss that she has had to contend with in her life. I enjoyed the fact that she provided the backstory of her family and told her life story then segwaying her story in relation to that of her daughter the Great Whitney Houston. This book was done well, unfortunately her granddaughter has now passed since the release of the book, it so unfortunate she has had to funeralize her granddaughter so soon.
