Mark Yakes has been writing poetry and composing music for over 20 years. He is an admirer of Samuel Beckett, Dylan Thomas, Lewis Carroll, Wendy Cope and John Hegley. 'Paganini' is based upon information contained on the sleeve notes of a cassette of the caprices of Niccolò Paganini (1782-1840), whilst 'Carmelites' was written in one sitting as a stream of consciousness.
Mark has been a professional musician, music teacher, community arts worker, graphic designer, performance poet, chemist's lackey, bookshop sales assistant, tyre handler, building labourer, and waiter in a restaurant in Brighton, England. During the 1980s, Mark's band toured the UK and Europe, working with such artists as Gil Scott Heron, Level 42, The Specials, and XTC.
The tracks on this compilation are played by Mark on a 4-string guitar which he designed and built himself. 'Drakes' was composed after hearing a CD of Nick Drake's songs, and 'Jazz Club' was specially chosen as intro music for a mini-series on BBC Radio 4.
