Publisher's Summary

Spencer Tracy said she was a tough old Yankee horsetrader. George Cukor called her a resolute force of nature. Peter O'Toole claimed to be terrified of her. For decades, Katharine Hepburn has proved to be as electrifying a personality as she is an actress, treasured for her candor and iron-willed integrity as well as her dazzling talent. Now, in this revealing tribute, Hepburn's friends and family - as well as the actress herself - recount the life and times of America's first lady of cinema.

Katharine Hepburn: A Tribute details the patrician beauty's triumphs and sorrows: her carefree bohemian childhood cut short by her older brother's death; her dazzling Broadway debut and subsequent rise to movie stardom; her passionate and combative love affair with Spencer Tracy; her quiet retired life in Connecticut. The star's close friends offer candid takes on Hepburn's often contradictory nature, as well as remarkable insights into little-known details of her personal life. The star herself speaks out about her life and work, in press conferences and illuminating interviews.

This extraordinary presentation includes exclusive, never-before-heard interviews with Hepburn's younger brother, Dr. Robert Hepburn, and John Wayne's oldest son Michael. Those closest to her present rare glimpses of her gentle side: her unfailing generosity toward those close to her, her fierce devotion to Tracy, and her bravery in the face of anguishing loss. A fitting homage to a singular life, Katharine Hepburn: A Tribute salutes one of America's most beloved icons.

    "A big disappointment"

I'll bet I wasn't the only listener who ordered this book believing it to be the recent best-seller-list biography published shortly after her death. There were interesting tidbits, but the fawning descriptions of "this remarkable actress," etc. in almost every paragraph and the Hollywood-hype reading by the narrator had me feeling that I was listening to a publicity blurb from the forties. It also had the effect of presenting Ms. Hepburn as an icon, not a human being, which got pretty dull after a while. I hope Audible offers the other biography, the name of which, of course, escapes me right now.

"Worshipful To The Point Of Nauseum"

The one excelent gift the author gives us is interviews of the actual players in Katharine Hepburn's life. Family members and directors and actors lend their voices and personal accounts of time with Hepburn. By that fact alone...this book works better as an audio than a tradional page turned volume. I didn't learn anything new about Ms. Hepburn's life, here. All of the accounts of Kate were very worshipful to the point of nauseum. Wasn't amazing...just okay.

    "Lovely Finale"

Touching tribute to the great actress features many interesting interviews with those that knew her. These comments are interwoven with dialogues where Miss Hepburn tells of her own memories and friendships. Most of the work deals with her later years in New York and finally Fenwick, CT.
