Publisher's summary

For readers or listeners of Sister Souljah’s No Disrespect, Nathan McCall’s Makes Me Wanna Holler, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, and Monster by Sanyika Shakur comes the definitive memoir from Ice-T, the acclaimed rapper and actor known for telling it like it is.

Ice-T offers his hip-hop generation’s Horatio Alger story: the narrative of an orphaned child who, drawn inexorably into a harrowing life of crime, ultimately turns away from the streets and, through self-discipline and a single-minded work ethic, forges a path to international fame as a musician and film-and-television star.

Ice-T was born Tracy Marrow in New Jersey. As an only child whose parents died when he was very young, he became involved in Los Angeles gangs before spending four years in the army. He released a string of groundbreaking West Coast rap records and formed the thrash-metal band Body Count. He currently stars as Detective Fin Tutuola on Law & Order: SVU.

Critic reviews

“In this intriguing memoir, groundbreaking rapper and actor Ice-T chronicles his rise from nomadic criminal to hip-hop star…. Ice-T is a canny businessman, and he charts clearly the decisions that brought him up each step of a very treacherous ladder.” ( Publishers Weekly)

Not a fan of narrator

Good book. The narrator seemed to be trying too hard to imitate Ice T's speech instead of finding his own voice, it was distracting.

Fantastic book

I enjoyed this book by Ice-T. He's definitely influenced by Iceberg Slim with his memoir.

would prefer more

I would have preferred to hear more if the struggle transitioning from one lifestyle to another. Instead of the attitude that it just "dropped in my lap".. no disrespect though.. I've got MAD LOVE for Ice-T

Inspiring even for this middle aged white lady!

Thank you, Ice, for writing this memoir! It took me back to the 80's when I was in high school and the 90's when I lived a "colorful" life in Vegas. It's always best to get out of the game while you're young and can do it. I'm glad that you did and lived to tell about it.

I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in social justice, pop culture, and vulnerable populations.

The narration was horrible due to...

thumbs down to the person who hire the reader. Either thumbs down to the idiot who hired the reader, or the reader who did not do his research. My only guess is that the reader was approximately 70 years old and up. Not that he sounded old, but he did not know any of the vernacular and had all of the pronunciations wrong for simple words. For example Technic turntables are pronounced as the word technique. when talking about the gang life the word Piru this guy pronounced and such a weird way it took me a second to figure out what he was talking about which means he has absolutely no clue about the game Life in which he was narrating. then the ultimate crime was he miss pronounced the legendary rapper Eric B & Rakim name. you pronounce the name Rakim as Rakeem. there is not many black men alive under the age of 55 who do not know how to pronounce any of the things that he was mispronouncing. that's why I feel he must have been over 70 years old or something. I feel if you are going to get a narrator to read such a book, at least get one who is invested enough to research the pronunciation of important words of the book. if not just get someone who actually grew up in the era and would naturally be familiar with the phrases and words.

Gritty, honest and helpful for your soul

If you need life or career advice, Ice-T hooks you up. I have read and re-read this book twice, and just finished listening to it for my third go-around. I grew up Listening to Ice's OG and Bodycount and spent my adult years watching him on SVU as Fin. I went in looking to find out more about the man, Tracy Marrow, and ended up finding sound advice. Pay attention to Chapter 16 and WRITE IT DOWN! Take an inventory of yourself with it. I now own this book in print, and it will be a reference for my mentees even at work.

Enjoyed this book enough to write a review!

The narrator was great. The book made me feel like I was listening to
Ice T having a conversation with me. Absolutely loved his story.
