I Shouldn't Even Be Doing This!: and Other Things That Strike Me as Funny

That stammer. Those basset-hound eyes. That bone-dry wit. There has never been another comedian like Bob Newhart. In this, his first audiobook ever, Newhart gives his brilliant and bemused twist on a multitude of topics, including flying, the trials of a family holiday in a Winnebago, and more serious subjects, such as golf. And, of course, there are side-splittingly funny stories from his life and career. Who else has a drinking game named after him? ("Hi, Bob!")

This isn't a memoir like most memoirs. It's an audiobook only Bob Newhart could have conceived, with his unique worldview and irrepressibly wry humor. Oh, and there's a fair bit of plain silliness, too.

    "I love Bob!"

I agree with Monica from Woodstock, GA. How can you not love Bob? I was a kid when the first Bob Newhart show was on TV, so had not heard all the old routines. Perhaps if I had the book would be a rehash, but for me it was just a joy to have Bob back in my living room.

    "who doesn't love Bob!"

I love to hear his voice, something about it is familiar and warm. He makes me smile even if I have heard this stuff before. Get this if you are a true Bob Newhart fan.....

    "Great read"

Newhart's comedy sprinkled in here and there with a light biography of Newhart's experiences make this a great read. This is really more of Bob Newhart telling "behind the scenes" stories of events in his life with his dry wit than a bio. Thoroughly enjoyed this, only wish it was longer.

    "One Funny Guy"

Bob Newhart was just a few years before my time, but I did have exposure to the Newhart shows and his comedy routines recently, and he's become one of my favorite all-time comedians. In this, his audiobiography, he is a little older, and isn't as energetic as he used to be, but he's still as witty and enjoyable as ever. It's a refreshing look at a good man and a good humorist.

    "Lukewarm"

I grew up on Bob Newhart, mainly his two sitcoms with a few stand-up routines thrown in. Thus, I felt I unnderstood his comic style and looked forward to this book. Alas, it went down like cheap Chinese food and left me still hungry. Even granting allowances for Bob's dead-pan delivery, the narrative doesn't seem to take the reader/listener much anywhere. I found myself wanting to know more about Bob's network years and the people he knew.

I did rate this book 3 stars because Bob Newhart has been one of the more pleasant icons in our times. Perhaps the weakneess of this offering lies with its editing. I don't know, it just left me lukewarm.

    "Good, not great"

This is a long comedy album. You wil laugh. The key to it is that Bob himself reads it. It is the telling of the story telling that makes this worth listening to. I gave it 3 stars as it is consumable, not memorable.

    "A Newhart"

Bob Newhart manages to cover his entire history, from entering show business, to now, all the while maintaining his low-key, addictive personal mannerisms. Always in character, he shares bumping elbows with decades of other top performers from New York, thru Vegas, and L.A.

Newhart fans will not be disappointed.

    "You must listen to this."

I am so glad Newhart read this himself. Who else could tell a Newhart story? And what an inspiring and funny life story? He could have quit many times but kept plugging away and found his place. America is so blessed that he did not stay with his accounting career. And his last chapter is so correct - we need to be able to laugh at ourselves and not be so PC!

    "Enjoyable"

I am enjoying this book. I have loved Bob Newhart for ages and his life story is interesting to me. I like that he repeats some of his best routines.
