Editorial reviews

Editors Select, April 2014 - I’m not the type of person who typically reads celebrity biographies. To be honest, I’ve only read these types of books out of need on long flights. I willingly picked up Judy Greer’s I Don’t Know What You Know Me From: Confessions of a Co-Star because I happen to love the eclectic mix of television shows and movies in which she’s been. Her book is funny, interesting, and honest. She speaks of her childhood in Michigan, her college years in Chicago, and her time in L.A. The best part? It’s like listening to your best friend talk about her day. –Laura, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

Like Tina Fey, Chelsea Handler, and other (best-selling) co-stars, Judy Greer is taking pen to paper and in her honest, self-deprecating, and hilariously relatable way reminding us why she's not America's sweetheart but America's best friend.

You know Judy Greer, right? Wait, what was she in again? The Wedding Planner, 13 Going on 30, 27 Dresses, The Descendants. Yes, you totally recognize her. And, odds are, if you're like most women in America, you feel like she's already your friend. Thankfully, Greer has finally written a book of essays about all the moments, topics, observations, and confessions that you would hope to hear from your best friend. How a midnight shopping trip to CVS can cure all. What it's like to have stepchildren. And how she really feels about her mother. Yes, it's all in there. But Judy Greer isn't just a regular friend - she's a celebrity friend. Want to know which celebs she's peed next to? Or what the Oscars were actually like? Or which hot actor gave her father a Harley Davidson? Don't worry - that's included, too. Besides being laugh-out-loud funny, you'll love her because she makes us genuinely feel like she's one of us. Because even though she sometimes has a stylist and a make-up artist, she still wears (and hates!) Spanx. Because she starts her book like this: "This is who I am. This is what I think about things. This is stuff that happened to me, that could have just as easily have happened to you. I'm not that special, and we're probably not that different. I think I am really lucky to be where I am in life, but I've never really lost that feeling that I don't fit in, and if you have, will you please email me and tell me how you did it? I'm serious."

I Will Always Know Judy Greer

What made the experience of listening to I Don't Know What You Know Me From the most enjoyable?

I've been a fan of Judy Greer's career for a long time but I think this audiobook just made me fall in love with her even more. I primarily listen to audiobooks in my car and her performance feels like she's sitting in the passenger seat next to you telling you a wide variety of crazy stories. Donning her best "best friend" role, she's incredibly relateable. Doesn't feel like a "read" at all. Loved every second of it.

What did you like best about this story?

Greer has a way of writing humor into her stories that flows naturally. Never feels forced or cringe-worthy.

What does Judy Greer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Judy's performance brought a feeling of being told the story like a friend would when you're just out on a coffee date. I didn't feel I was having anything read to me at all. It was wonderfully natural.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but more so I just wanted more. The chapters were concise enough that I could listen to one or two back and forth on my longer drives. It made my longer car rides something to look forward to. Was kinda sad when it ended.

Funny, cute and overall entertaining

I got more than I bargained for in this book. I am familiar with Judy and have enjoyed her work in archer, arrested development, 27 dresses, wedding planner etc, but I have a new appreciation for her off screen now.
I first became interested in this book after hearing her talk on the wrap up show about a vinyl party she and her husband threw that Gary Del'Abate attended .

I found her storytelling engaging and would recommend this title to others looking for something lighthearted and fun.

I look forward to seeing her on screen again soon.

Very entertaining, light hearted listening

Would you consider the audio edition of I Don't Know What You Know Me From to be better than the print version?

Never read the print version.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Um....Judy? It was like I was sitting across from her at a cafe table or a park bench and she is telling snippets of her life experiences.

What does Judy Greer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

You really get involved with her expressions and its always better to hear it from the person herself recounting the stories.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not exactly, but close to it. Stories very entertaining but it wasn't one long connected story so you could take breaks after chapters completed.

Any additional comments?

I've always been a fan of Judy Greer mostly without knowing it for years. I didn't even know her NAME until this audiobook came out and I said to myself, "Oh right!!! Her. So thats her name!"

An Absolutely Fantastic & Fun Book!!

I know where I know Judy Greer from... this fantastic book!!!! Yes, I had seen her in The Wedding Planner, Arrested Development, 13 Going On 30, Arrested Development again, and a number of projects in between, but never had I known how sharp of a wit and how much fun I could have listening to her tell her life story.

I have been blessed to "read" two audio books this year that I didn't want to put down and couldn't wait to start up again, and this is one of them!!! I love the humor, the way she calls people (including her parents) "liars" on a regular basis, and learning the fantastic, fun story of one of the greatest actresses we have ever had... even if we can't always recall what we saw her in last or her name.

I'll remember her name now, because this book is fantastic!!!!

Sweet, Sweet Judy

I have always liked Judy Greer. This book is not a Hollywood tell-all. While it does have a few stories about Hollywood life, it is mostly a sweet story about Judy's life. I enjoyed hearing about her life and it just made me like her even more. Someone make Judy a leading lady already!!

Bought it just for her voice

I’ll admit I initially got this solely because I love Judy Greer’s voice. I do think her career is fascinating too. She pops up in movies/TV all the time but isn’t immediately recognizable. She somehow manages to be different enough that I always think, ‘Who is that??’
The book doesn’t have any major Hollywood revelations but is very engaging just the same.
She doesn’t tell you her secret for turning up everywhere, but I think the answer is simple: she’s a skilled actor.
She does share how she came to Hollywood, a sweet story about her dad and Ashton Kutcher, auditions, how she juggles her life, failed pilots, the less glamorous side award shows and many other things. It’s definitely worth a read or listen.

Engaging and Fun

What did you love best about I Don't Know What You Know Me From?

It was a charming book read by a charming author. I enjoyed hearing about her day-to-day life on set, and also during her real life.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. It was cute and not terribly self-indulgent for a celebrity memoir but it's like a sugary snack: good for in between meals but I can only take so much in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

I wish there were more details on how Ms. Greer got into the biz, her first auditions, her first roles (there were some anecdotes but not comprehensive). However, this is just my preferred subject, nothing I was promised. Overall, she seems down to earth and likable.

Outstanding!!

I am now a huge fan! I knew where I knew her from, I have enjoyed her work for a while. But this story (and her performance) is charming and insightful. If you need an entertaining look into a successful working actors life who is not too big for her own spanx...read this book. Be prepared to walk a way a fan. I hope I meet her one day, I will tell her I know her from her book.
