Editorial reviews

Editors Select, April 2014 - I’m not the type of person who typically reads celebrity biographies. To be honest, I’ve only read these types of books out of need on long flights. I willingly picked up Judy Greer’s I Don’t Know What You Know Me From: Confessions of a Co-Star because I happen to love the eclectic mix of television shows and movies in which she’s been. Her book is funny, interesting, and honest. She speaks of her childhood in Michigan, her college years in Chicago, and her time in L.A. The best part? It’s like listening to your best friend talk about her day. –Laura, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

Like Tina Fey, Chelsea Handler, and other (best-selling) co-stars, Judy Greer is taking pen to paper and in her honest, self-deprecating, and hilariously relatable way reminding us why she's not America's sweetheart but America's best friend.

You know Judy Greer, right? Wait, what was she in again? The Wedding Planner, 13 Going on 30, 27 Dresses, The Descendants. Yes, you totally recognize her. And, odds are, if you're like most women in America, you feel like she's already your friend. Thankfully, Greer has finally written a book of essays about all the moments, topics, observations, and confessions that you would hope to hear from your best friend. How a midnight shopping trip to CVS can cure all. What it's like to have stepchildren. And how she really feels about her mother. Yes, it's all in there. But Judy Greer isn't just a regular friend - she's a celebrity friend. Want to know which celebs she's peed next to? Or what the Oscars were actually like? Or which hot actor gave her father a Harley Davidson? Don't worry - that's included, too. Besides being laugh-out-loud funny, you'll love her because she makes us genuinely feel like she's one of us. Because even though she sometimes has a stylist and a make-up artist, she still wears (and hates!) Spanx. Because she starts her book like this: "This is who I am. This is what I think about things. This is stuff that happened to me, that could have just as easily have happened to you. I'm not that special, and we're probably not that different. I think I am really lucky to be where I am in life, but I've never really lost that feeling that I don't fit in, and if you have, will you please email me and tell me how you did it? I'm serious."

Confessions of a Co-Star

This book was randomly suggested to me by the Audible app when I signed up for a free trial and even though I’ve watched so many films and shows with Judy Greer in them, I didn’t know she had written a book. When I saw that the audiobook was also read by Judy herself, I was sold and chose it as my first Audible “read”.
The actual book isn’t anything special but Judy’s performance was what made it compelling to me. Her acting from the screen translates really well into the audio, she’s as charming as she’s quirky and it feels like you’re listening to a good friend of yours telling you a funny anecdote about her day. So, even though some of the essays felt bland to me, more than a couple were surprisingly relatable and funny, it’s a nice and light read which managed to help me out of a reading slump really well.

Funny, cute and overall entertaining

I got more than I bargained for in this book. I am familiar with Judy and have enjoyed her work in archer, arrested development, 27 dresses, wedding planner etc, but I have a new appreciation for her off screen now.
I first became interested in this book after hearing her talk on the wrap up show about a vinyl party she and her husband threw that Gary Del'Abate attended .

I found her storytelling engaging and would recommend this title to others looking for something lighthearted and fun.

I look forward to seeing her on screen again soon.

Very Fun Listen!

What a fun book! I have always liked Judy Greer as an actress so I was very excited to listen to this book. Such a fun listen and her narration made it even better. I was so sad I binged it too quickly!

Binge worthy

So I planned to listen to this as my vacation read but started before the trip and didn't stop. Judy and her book are super interesting and intriguing and kept me totally in each moment. Judy also provides some incredibly useful advice on what to say when you meet a celebrity (god knows I've said plenty of stupid things before... thank you so much). Highly recommend this book and its leading lady.

Just Right

The title is on point. I've watched a number of movies wherein she's a supporting cast member. In fact, it's been so many that I eventually learned her name. She touches on this topic quite a lot in her essays and it's totally fine. Each one was written with the right balance of humor and honesty. It's good as far as celebrity memoirs go. Listening to Judy Greer narrate is quite fun. It's like listening to a friend get you up to speed on her life after being apart for so long. Not much to say about it except that I liked it. Should I be rating this a 3 instead? Nah. Judy Greer's awesome. (And she got me through this work week so there's that.)

An Absolutely Fantastic & Fun Book!!

I know where I know Judy Greer from... this fantastic book!!!! Yes, I had seen her in The Wedding Planner, Arrested Development, 13 Going On 30, Arrested Development again, and a number of projects in between, but never had I known how sharp of a wit and how much fun I could have listening to her tell her life story.

I have been blessed to "read" two audio books this year that I didn't want to put down and couldn't wait to start up again, and this is one of them!!! I love the humor, the way she calls people (including her parents) "liars" on a regular basis, and learning the fantastic, fun story of one of the greatest actresses we have ever had... even if we can't always recall what we saw her in last or her name.

I'll remember her name now, because this book is fantastic!!!!

Discovered Through Marc Maron's WTF Podcast

Bios and memoirs are my favorite of the Audiobook categories. I feel like you're having a one-on-one conversation and getting to know the author on a personal level. Judy Greer's interview with Marc Maron was a pleasant listen and was glad to see she had a book out. She has a dedication to her craft, speaks incredibly well, and her personality shines in her debut as an author. Performance artists, like Judy Greer, give audiobooks an edge in experiencing it as a listener. Would recommend her book and hope she writes more in the years to come.

Funny and honest

I love Judy Greer, and hearing her read her own work was a joy. Her stories are funny and real, and she seems like the kind of person everyone wants to be friends with! Definitely worth a listen.

Normal view of her life...not very exciting

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No, Not sure why I was interested in this.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Thank goodness it's over.

Did Judy Greer do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Pretty much all about her...but...the book WAS about her.

Do you think I Don't Know What You Know Me From needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Nope
