The story of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III rise to fame, through his dragon-training exploits, told in Hiccup's own words by David Tennant.
Hiccup was a truly extraordinary Viking Hero, Warrior chieftain, awesome sword-fighter and amateur naturalist. He was known throughout Vikingdom as 'the Dragon Whisperer' on account of his power over these terrifying beasts. But it wasn't always like that....

The story was an enjoyable and lighthearted listen. David Tennant does an excellent job differentiating the different characters (and there are quite a few!) that it was easy to visualize the story. It is a very different story than the movie, so if you seen the movie, you will still get a lot out of this book.
I personally loved the scene with the boys practicing with their dragons on catching fish. I love the interactions between toothless and the other dragons as well as Hiccup's with the other boys.
I chuckled quite a bit. It is a cheerful story.
I listened to this book while on a 26 hour drive. I listened to several books, and this was one of the few that passed the time really quickly. I enjoyed it so much, that I downloaded all the other books in the series and plan to listen to them on my commute to and from work.
Delighful. The story is different to (and so much better than) the movie. David Tennant knows how to read and enjoys doing so.
All his characters are instantly identifiable by their voices. You never think for a minute it is a character other than that than which it is intended to be - his character voices never falter.
We have a holiday home a couple of hours from our house. We listen to a half a book in each direction. Our boys (8 and 6 years) never act up in the car when these are on. It makes driving such a delight.
We are working our way through the series and each book is proving to be a delight. Well written, narrated and produced. We love them as much as the kids do.
The audio book was very good.
Old Wrinkly was my favorite character because he always seemed a step ahead of everyone else.
No, I haven't
When Toothless sacrificed himself for Hiccup.
Laugh out loud!
David Tennant's performance
He was perfect!! He voiced the characters in such a humorous way that I can't imagine getting that much pleasure out of simply reading the story!
I laughed out loud and often
No, as it is abridged, but it is great to listen to.
Hiccup. He is an unlikely hero and children can identify with his failings
Gobber the Belch
My grandson and his mother have both read the book, but they are thoroughly enjoying the audio version as they drive 30km home from school every day.
Yes, yes, YES. You don't even need to be under the age of 12 to enjoy this!
ALL of them! The narrator does a stunning job. :)
Yes, car ride. :)
I recommend them all. GREAT!!!
David Tennant is an excellent narrator. The voices and the sound effects he makes are cool and allow me to build images as he reads. The book itself is entertaining and funny.
Fishlegs is my favorite character because he is always saying what needs to be said.
They are all awesome!
Our family listened to this one on a long road trip. It was so good, we had trouble getting out of the car at stops - everybody, including mom and dad, wanted to listen "just one minute longer, pleeeeeeeease!"
The narrator is fantastic - our kids were talking like dragons and vikings for a long time afterwards!
"Brilliant book for the family"
We have listened to this book on various car trips now - it's one of the children's favourites. The story is engaging and entertaining, and David Tenant does a fantastic job of reading it.
Bought for a long drive, we all (2 adults, 9yo boy, 7yo girl) really enjoyed Tennant's reading of this. Almost nothing like the Dreamworks film, of course, here the Scottish Hairy Hooligan tribe all have dragon pets and the weedy Hiccup, son of the fearsome Chief Stoick The Vast gets the smallest, sarkiest, and most cowardly dragon any of them have ever seen. How will Hiccup and Toothless fare in a intertribe dragon tournament (against an apparently Northern Irish neighbour tribe) as well as an alarmingly vast sea dragon coming up from his slumber at the ocean?
David Tennant is predictably deft at all the funny accents, and we all had great fun with this audiobook.
Fantastic book - was a little reluctant to buy the audio book as my children saw the film. However the plot of the book is completely different - the part the same as the film is Hiccup's character. The story line is radically different - which was great as non of knew what was coming next.
David Tennant is great to listen to - and had me giggling a few times. My two are 7 and 9 and loved it.
Way better than the film.
Absolutely great story to read, especially for boys. Whole series by Cressida Cowell is very imaginative, adventures and very funny!!! Audio by David Tennant is superb whole family listen and enjoy … Great for all ages from 5 to 95 years old. Thank you so much!!!
"Great family listening"
Kept us entertained on a long car journey. Not sure it's abridged though as currently reading it to my youngest at bedtime and it seems exactly the same. It's not a terribly long book.
