The story of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III rise to fame, through his dragon-training exploits, told in Hiccup's own words by David Tennant.
Hiccup was a truly extraordinary Viking Hero, Warrior chieftain, awesome sword-fighter and amateur naturalist. He was known throughout Vikingdom as 'the Dragon Whisperer' on account of his power over these terrifying beasts. But it wasn't always like that....

The narrator conveys a delightful sense of the unlikely relationship between a dragon and a boy. As in all the best kid's stories the grown ups come across as clueless and the bigger bullying boys as morons. Although the listener knows a happy ending is inevitable, there are still some twists and turns, battles and obstacles that keep the story moving. Above all - it is funny. My 10 year old turned up his nose and said the story was too young for him and then listened agog all the way through.
His natural Scottish accent! He moderates it to adapt to all the characters and his stuttering Toothless the dragon is just adorable.
Laugh. A lot.
Worth it just for David Tennant. And the dragon-potty-training scene!
It is a charming and witty story. As a warning, if you read this expecting to get the movie then you are going to be disappointed. Dreamworks really took it upon themselves to change things when they made their film but that isn't to say that the book is bad. It is the original thing after all. I really liked it and will look into continuing the series.
David Tennant was superb at putting emotion and inflection into his voice as he spoke. His voice was neither dull or monotone but instead really moved with the story. He tried to make each character have their own unique voice and for the most part he really succeded. I loved him.
Probably, david tennant is amazing and it was nice to listen to on a long drive.
Fish legs, the side characters are always more interesting, it's a kids book though so not a major requirement
Tennants accent is amazing, and perfect for the book. but there is nothing bad about him anyways.
Having read the print books (yes, my kid has those too!) aloud rather a lot, Tennant manages to iron out some of the not-quite-rolling-off-the-tongue aspects of the style.
To reach for the next book.
David Tennant does all the character voices - makes you feel like you're a kid again.
Great for big and little kids!
Absolutely! I think that any one at any age can relate to this book. It's a great story about building character and how to build honor not by your actions or being strong but staying true to yourself and following your gut.
Hiccup was my favorite character. I admired how he stood calm in all situations even though he may have been afraid on the inside. He proved that true wit is more useful than strength.
I loved his accent and the different inflections he used in his voice. You could hear that he was really invested in the story and he kept you listening to every word.
Being a hero the hard way!
LOVED IT! Really a true pleasure to listen to! I am 24 years old and I think that this story is good for any one. There were a lot of great characters and the story ended differently than you typically expect from a tale of a legend.
The reader, David Tennent is excellent!
He is a good reader,if you have seen him on Doctor Who and miss him, then check out this book.
The sound goes up and down, kind of maddening.
We just finished listening to this book yesterday. Fabulous book for the whole family, parents and kids both. Awesomely read by Mr. Tennant. We look forward to getting the other books of this series.
Near the top. One of the best.
The way the story is brought to life by David (McDonald) Tennant.
The emphasis he puts on certain words adds to the delight of listening - it really grabs my attention. I find what he is saying hilarious. It's difficult to explain. Not just a regular narration - there's some *feeling* here! :D yayyy
I haven't even gotten through the whole book yet and I'm hooked.
My kids (3 and 5)would have liked the story, but they had a really hard time understanding the narrator.
The great voices David Tennant uses for the different charters. A clever story full of humour and wisdom.
Hiccup, becoming a hero the hard way!
Amazing to listening to even after the 15th time.
Story is great and funny and perfectly told by David Tenant. He gives each character his own personality. It actually makes all other audio books dull to listen too. He spoiled us :)
My daughter adores this for long car journeys and I enjoy listening to Tennant's witty interpretation. I particularly enjoy the characterisation of Toothless. As they are unabridged, they reinforce the books which are a favourite obsession. Looking forward to the next installment.
"The same but different"
I was expecting a similar story to the film How to Tame Your Dragon but apart from some of the character names and the huge dragons from the second film, the book was very different. I loved it though, listened to it in one sitting (and got a very numb bum!).
"King of gamer"
I love this book because it has action and I like the movie and I want to read all hiccups adventure
I never thought that how to train your dragon book was so different to the movie..... And so much better,
David Tennant is brilliant at reading this story, you feel like you are in the story.
You must read\listen to this story!!
It is AMAZING
-tilly age 11
I really enjoyed this book. David Tennant is an excellent narrator and really brings the characters to life
"Good but not what i was expecting"
Its good and I would recommend it but its not what I was expecting,
The story line is very different from the movie. With out giving anything away the things that I found surprisingly different were the way Hiccup and Toothless meet, dragons talk although in there own language and only Hiccup seems to be able to talk to them.
Brilliant story with an excellent narrator filled the trip back from our holiday perfectly kids were silent for 3 1/2 hours adults loved it too.
"Good for adults "
Good for any age to read and I enjoyed every minute of this story I will definitely get the rest of the books
"Exciting well written dragon lead adventures"
Cressida Cowell writing is gold. Captivating, exciting and well done. Coupled with the easy to listen to story telling voice of David Tennent, a match made for each other.
