Publisher's summary

"It felt like I was speeding on the Autobahn toward hell, trapped inside a DeLorean with no brakes. And even if I could somehow stop, I'd still be screwed, because there's no way I'd ever be able to figure out how to open those insane, cocaine-designed doors."

The two-time Emmy Award-winning actress has written her first book, a surprisingly raw and triumphant memoir that is outrageous, moving, sweet, tragic, and heartbreakingly honest. Guts is a true triumph - a memoir that manages to be as frank and revealing as Augusten Burroughs, yet as hilarious and witty as David Sedaris.

With Guts, Johnston takes us on a journey so truthful and relatable, so remarkably fresh, it promises to stay with the listener for a long, long time.

couldn't have come at a better time

I enjoyed every word, even as one of those over weight southern type women who are crazy about 3rd rock... but especially as a 6 foot tall woman who shared the same nickname during school years. Started this book employed and finished it the morning after I was laid off... Kristen's words couldn't have come at a better time, and I will love this book forever!

Amazing!!

Loved it!! I didn't even know she was my favorite actress from 3rd Rock...... until that first chapter and I heard her voice! I read it in a couple days. Like her character she was hilarious. But also so real!! So raw!! Sharing some painful times that alot of people would not want to share. It's not your typical addiction story at all!! I think she was really brave to share the core of her soul the way she did!! You won't be dissapounted. Even if you have no experience with addiction, there is something for everyone here. She is so down to earth and actually pretty hard on herself. Not in a feel sorry for me way. I hope recovery taught her how to love herself as much as I do!!❤

Honest

Guts is funny and brutally honest through the eyes of Kristen Johnston. I enjoy her perspective on everything going on and the comedic way she was able to describe some of the most horrible situations.

The bottom line is tell the truth. Be honest with yourself but lets face it, that's hard to do and she makes this clear.

I am also thrilled the author read her book. She has a lot of energy in the way she reads and to me it comes off exactly how she would be thinking it in her head which brings so much life into it.

5 star Performance

If you could sum up Guts in three words, what would they be?

Visceral, Raw, Honest

What did you like best about this story?

all of the above...no lulls in storyline

What about Kristen Johnston’s performance did you like?

Brought all the emotion the storyline deserved unapologetically...actually physically felt this story in my gut....went there without any prior insight to the storyline...very talented writer and performance.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

just the title says it all...no tagline...one word..like a fist

Any additional comments?

inspiring original work about a complex subject

Put on your Nike's and Just Read It!

Kristen must be the logical result of a hilarious, yet twistedly raw 3-way between Chris Farley, Dennis Miller, and a german RuPaul. GUTS is witty and frank, while strapping on a bedazzled self deprecating sass. Kristen grabs a hold of your hand and invites you to be a fly on the wall of some wretchedly funny moments peppered with some melancholy brooding during an acidic period of her life that she turns around beautifully.
