Editorial reviews

One of the most beloved and talented narrators to ever record a book, Frank Muller narrated over 200 audiobooks in his lifetime, from classics to contemporary best sellers, and won several awards in the process. Muller's jaw-dropping versatility is in full display here as he fully embodies characters, from George Smiley's weary and enigmatic demeanor to the crafty shrewdness of a Dickensian villain. After listening to this montage of Muller's best performances, listeners will find themselves agreeing with Stephen King's declaration that when Muller reads, "the blind will see, the lame will walk, and the deaf will hear."

Publisher's summary

Frank Muller was one of the most talented narrators to ever record a book. As Stephen King said, "[When Frank reads], the blind will see, the lame will walk, and the deaf will hear."

Enjoy this montage of selections from some of Frank's recordings.

Nice sampling of his work

I didn't know him by name, and only discovered Frank Muller after finding a reference to him in an article about RC Bray.

Muller made his narrations come alive and I look forward to hearing some of the classics in the future. Meanwhile this 15 minute sampling is a great taste for anyone wondering if audio books are a great alternative to reading them themselves.

Farewell Old Friend & Gods Speed:

I have had the extreme pleasure, thanks to Audible to have had Frank Muller read to me so many compelling, scary, wistful & edge of your seat stories over the years. I feel I have come to know very well the characters Frank so very well told the story of & maybe even Frank as well.

I was so very sad to hear Mr. Frank Muller's passing. I truly feel it's an old friend we shall miss & cherish forever. See you perhaps in the next life Frank & Thanks again for your craft of storytelling.

Final reader rating from a humble reader: 6.0 & Bravo Mistro Muller.

Nice tribute

This is a very nice montage of audio. What better way to pay tribute a person than presenting their great work? I am actually going to start looking for books narrated by him. I've heard him in the Gunslinger series from Stephen King but will venture out a bit now.

I love Frank Muller as a narrator.

One of the best narrators I've heard. I will lookup other books narrated by him.

a tragic like as to the world of literature.

Frank is the absolute best narrator that ever blessed us with his art. This tribute was fantastic and nostalgic as I have been listening to a lot of his work (he is the one person I'd choose books according to him narrating them regardless of the book itself) and was very well edited. Frank might have passed but his name and art lives on 🖤

May his legend endure and inspire forever.

This is just a 15-minute montage, a brief collection of snippets from multiple pieces of Muller's work, so in one way, it falls far short of the true glory of his masterful narration, which (I have read) goes back to the late '70s. In another sense, though, everything he does is just so damned good, that ANY such montage will soar as representative of his incredible voice acting, and "Frank Muller: A Montage" is no exception.

It's free (at least today, though I suspect it will remain so), so pick it up. You will enjoy it, as long as you go into it knowing that the longest piece is maybe 45 seconds. I recognized many of my favorite books featured, including Herman Melville's "Moby Dick," Stephen King's "The Green Mile," and he and Peter Straub's "The Talisman" and "Black House," as well as some Charles Dickens and (I presume) Shakespeare. It was ALL fabulous! If you want to see (well, hear) how it's done, get this today.

The "contact us to learn how to make a contribution in his honor" will, I'm quite sure, lead you to the WaveDancer Foundation, founded (at least in part) by Stephen King. You should look into that.

A note to Audible. I didn't want to foul my review of this selection, but I have something that must be said: I have never listened to an audiobook and thought, "they should make that background music louder." That has happened with, quite literally, 0% of the books I've listened to. Contrarily, I HAVE, frequently, said the opposite: "That background music is way too loud!" That has been my reaction in probably close to 80% of my audiobook experiences ... and, unfortunately, this title falls in that latter category. The music should be softer to more easily hear Muller's voice.

Look, the music on most (all?) audiobooks is obviously added later, so the narrator has no way to know to raise his/her voice to compensate. It is usually played in transition points (near the end of a suspenseful passage) and quite often these require a softer voice. So, they are doing their job, bringing their voice down, making us lean in, and then you put these tunes in to, what, cue the moment? We already knew that, and then you ruin it!

Please discontinue this practice. When you produce these and add your own music, make it very, very low. When a publisher or independent audio narrator produces their own and adds music, instruct them to make the music tracks much lower than the voice tracks – maybe 1/3 the volume of the voice at the point where the music is to be added.

Thank you for your serious consideration of this very serious request.
