Aunque su datación exacta es incierta, el texto, por su temática, pertenece al ciclo platónico de las primeras obras llamadas Socráticas, que Platón escribió en su juventud, e incluso se piensa que es su primera obra.
La Apología se divide en tres partes. La primera para propia defensa de Sócrates (y que contiene las partes más famosas del texto) y la segunda y la tercera donde Sócrates es condenado a muerte.
