Publisher's summary

Kenneth Branagh and Alex Kingston star in Shakespeare's tragedy of love and power.

As part of BBC Radio 3's celebration of the 450th anniversary of the birth of William Shakespeare, Kenneth Branagh and Alex Kingston star in this brand-new production.

Lovers, politicians, superstars... Antony & Cleopatra is Shakespeare’s late and epic tragedy of mature love, and the catastrophic fall from grace and power that it brings about. Irresistibly drawn together, the couple are surrounded by friends, enemies, admirers, and critics, none of who remain unscathed by the folly and heartbreak of this magnificent pair. As empires clash around them, their destiny seems inevitable: to love each other ‘til death and even beyond. Produced by BBC Cymru Wales for BBC Radio 3, this radio production also features Geoffrey Streatfeild, Nigel Anthony, Don Gilet, and Peter Polycarpou amongst its cast.

Excellent Narration

Where does Antony and Cleopatra rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I loved the distinct voices of the characters. This made it easy to know who was talking. I enjoyed the story and was able to glean more meaning than when I read it in school.

Excellent even if edited

A great production. Yes, edited, so be forewarned, but most stage productions of early modern plays are edited anyways. There are a few choices on the part of the actors/director that I would change in terms of interpretation, but that’s to be expected. The actors’ voices are easy to tell apart, which is not always the case with other productions (ex. Arkangel, which are also excellent). Overall it’s quite well done.

Cuts a lot of lines from full play

I bought this to listen along as I read the play. I bought it because of the voice actors, but even their great voices can't make up for the fact that lines and even whole scenes are cut. To understand Shakespeare is to understand his language--how can you do so when the audiobook doesn't even care about meter or rhyme scheme? Disappointed!
